The Health ministry would direct companies that had imported dairy-based products containing whey protein concentrate (WPC80) suspected to be contaminated with clostridium botulinum bacteria to remove the products from the market.

Food Safety and Quality senior director Noraini Mohd Othman said the ministry would also direct the companies to destroy the recalled products.

She further advised parents and guardians who had been using the products including Karicare Infant Formula Stage 1, Karicare Gold+Follow On Formula Stage 2 (6-12 months), Dumex Dupro, Mamex Cherish, Mamex Explore and Bebelac 2, to switch to other alternatives temporarily.

"No import of the products is allowed unless certified free of the bacteria by a competent authority of the exporting countries," she said.

Australian authorities had earlier confirmed that possibly contaminated WPC80 was used in the premix infant formula and follow-on formula by Fonterra Australia Pty Ltd, which were exported only to Danone Dumex Malaysia.

In a statement, Danone Dumex said that they were informed by Fonterra yesterday that one of the ingredients had a potential quality issue and that they might have received supplies which were contaminated.

Those who have these products should call 1800-38-1038. "If you have recently purchased any products with the batch numbers detailed above, please return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.”
