Early on Aug. 8 ,2013 in New York the conductor aboard a Ditmars-bound N train at Queensboro Plaza reported a shark aboard the train in car (Isvett Verde )

How did the shark get there?

A dead shark has been discovered on the subway in New York City, transport officials have confirmed. The unlikely passenger, about 1.2m (4ft) long, was found under a row of seats on a Queens-bound train.

The conductor asked passengers to leave the car and closed it off. The train continued to the end of the line, and then a supervisor placed the shark in a garbage bag and put it in the trash.

Pigeons and even an opossum have made their way on to the trains before, but never a shark, transit officials said. However, where the shark came from remains a mystery.

Photos on the blog Gothamist depict the shark on the subway. It appears to be about 4 feet (1.2 meters) long.

At least one passenger added props such as a cigarette and a train pass to photograph with the shark's carcass.

Transit officials said they were aware of the photos but are making no effort to find the person who posted them. The transit authority says it has "better things to do."
