EC Chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah To Step Down On 1 July

He was appointed as chairman in January 2016.

Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah will be leaving his position as Election Commission (EC) chairman on 1 July 2018

Malaysiakini and Malay Mail reported that the decision by EC to cut short Mohd Hashim's services has received the assent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V on 7 June

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was notified of this on Monday, 11 June.

"The EC would like to inform that Mohd Hashim Abdullah will shorten his tenure as the chairperson, effective July 1, 2018," the official statement reads.

Mohd Hashim was appointed as EC chairman in January 2016 after joining the commission in September 2014

His tenure, however, has been riddled with controversy.

Last month, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Pakatan Harapan has received many complaints of alleged cheating by the Election Commission during the last month's general elections.

But Mohd Hashim has denied such accusations, saying that Pakatan Harapan's victory over Barisan Nasional in GE14 is proof that EC had acted in a "fair and transparent" manner.
