"Items at Kedai Rakyat are markedly cheaper than those in supermarkets and hypermarkets and helps families cut down on their expenses without losing out on quality," Former Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said.

The items are also repackaged in smaller quantities in order to enable low-income earners to purchase the items based on their abilities and needs.

A savings of RM22.59 on just a small shopping list isn’t bad and if consistently used, this store could save you a good amount. However, it is useful to note that the quality of the items you are getting cannot be adequately vouched for at present.

The store also stands true to its founding tenets: to provide necessities in smaller quantities for families who cannot afford to buy large quantities at a time. Even though this means spending more in future, this is useful for low income families with limited expendable income.

Even when the 1Malaysia products are indeed cheaper, they are nowhere the claimed “savings”. For example, for a 400gm packet of frozen minced beef, it would cost RM4.89 in KR1M. In Carrefour, the Ramly branded packet will cost RM5.29 or only 8% more, instead of the claimed 18% “savings”.

"While some products are indeed cheaper at KR1M, the price difference is far less than the claims of 30 per cent to 50 per cent for most products.

The willing operator would have to show its ability to run the KR1M outlets on a CSR basis. We would, of course, be more than happy if other local retailers such as Econsave, 99 Speedmart and Sunrise would offer to do KR1M outlets.

The best way to make it affordable was to package it as a generic brand, hence the 1Malaysia logo. Generic brands, he said, are traditionally difficult to sell, but thanks to the government’s push, it is now recognisable and accepted by the consumers.

"This isn’t the easy money business that some quarters make it out to be. It is something that we took on simply because we believed in its ideals, which was to make essential goods more affordable to low-income earners.

"Following the overwhelming response to KR1M stores particularly in rural areas, the number of products will also be increased to 300 items this year," he told reporters when met at a community funcion here today.
