Father Who Stole A Pack Of Cereal Among Other Grocery Items Jailed For 3 Months
The 49-year-old unemployed father of three said he had no choice but to steal to survive.
A 49-year-old unemployed man in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, was sentenced to three months in jail at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, 10 January, for admitting to stealing RM113.92 worth of groceries
The man pleaded guilty to stealing a pack of cereal, three packs of instant coffee, and perfume at the Servay Hypermarket in Mile 7, Inanam, on the night of 6 January, according to New Straits Times.
Following which, Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles sentenced him to two months in jail and slapped him with a fine of RM500, failing which he would serve another month behind bars.
The father of three was charged and sentenced under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries the maximum imprisonment of up to 10 years, as well as a fine for first-time offenders.
On the night of the incident, one of the security guards at the Servay Hypermarket had seen the accused behaving suspiciously
The guard stopped the man who was carrying a sling bag. He then admitted that he did not pay for the items.
In mitigation, Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik, who appeared for the prosecutor, urged for an appropriate sentence, while the accused, Musrikil Wara, asked for leniency. He was unrepresented.
The father of three said that his life was hard and he was forced to steal to survive.
The court ordered the accused to serve his sentence from the date of arrest, which was 6 January this year.
