26-Year-Old Man Jumps Off Second Penang Bridge

A 26-year-old man, believed to be the relative of a deputy minister, was the first to jump off the second Penang bridge in an attempt to take his own life on 5 March 2014.

Barely a week after its official opening, the second Penang bridge saw a suicide attempt, when a youth jumped off the bridge this afternoon.

A 26-Year-Old Man Who Is Believed To Be The Nephew Of A Deputy Minister Leapt Off The Bridge At Kilometre 13.9 From Batu Maung To Batu Kawan At 2.40pm

Southwest district police chief Superintendent Lai Fah Hin said the man was spotted trying to jump off the bridge at 2.40pm at kilometre 13.9 from Batu Maung to Batu Kawan.

The newspaper earlier described him as a son of a deputy minister, but has since amended this to nephew.

He Survived The Fall And Floated In The Water 500m Away From The Bridge For About Five Minutes Before He Was Rescued By Passing Fisherman

He was rescued by fishermen some 500m from KM13.9 of the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah bridge, the point where it is believed he leapt off.

"The man jumped off some 10 minutes after he was first seen," Lai said, adding that the man survived the fall and floated in the water for about five minutes before he was rescued by passing fishermen.

Patrollers And Police Rushed To The Site After Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd Was Alerted

He said Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd (JKSB), the bridge concessionaire, was alerted of the matter, before patrollers and police rushed to the site.

Maritime Police Brought The Man Back To The Batu Uban Marine Police Base

Marine police arrived moments later and brought him to its base in Batu Uban.

The Unmarried Man Is Now Receiving Treatment At The Penang Hospital

The man, a bachelor, was then sent to the Penang Hospital. He is now in stable condition.

He is now undergoing treatment at the Penang Hospital's intensive care unit.

He Will Be Investigated Under The Penal Code For Attempted Suicide

Balik Pulau OCPD Supt Lai Fah Hin said the suspect was now in stable condition and an investigation paper had been opened under Section 309 of the Penal Code for attempted suicide.

This Is The First Suicide Attempt On The Second Penang Bridge

It was also the first mishap reported since the bridge was opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on Saturday.

There have been numerous cases of suicide on the first Penang Bridge in the past. The second Penang bridge, now named Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge, was opened to traffic on March 2.
