GEORGE TOWN- A Form Three school prefect from a school in Sungai Nibong sustained a broken bone beneath the eye and serious injuries to his head after he was allegedly attacked by two Form Five students over a tie.

It is learnt the assault took place during recess at 11am. The victim, who was on duty near the canteen, stopped his senior and asked him to wear his necktie properly.

"The prefect asked a Form Five student to adjust his tie to fit school regulations. Following that, about 10 to 15 Form Five students assaulted him. Teachers stopped the attack and informed the victim's parents," a police spokesman said.

Upset at being reprimanded by a younger student, the senior took a swing at the victim's face and was joined in by his friends.

This was followed by a mob of at least 15 schoolboys beating up a Form Three prefect in their school compound in Sungai Nibong, near here.

Others, said to be friends of the bullies, joined in the attack at a staircase in one of the school buildings before fleeing.

Several students witnessed the attack and alerted their teachers

Several other students raised the alarm to their teachers, who stopped the assault. The victim's parents have lodged a report.

A teacher, who saw the injured student, alerted his mother and he was promptly taken to the Penang Hospital, where he received outpatient treatment. The victim’s father lodged a police report on the attack.

The spokesman said the boy's mother brought her son to Penang Hospital to treat his bruises and found that he suffered a fracture on the left cheekbone.

Vicitm's father says the parents of the two attackers have visited them at the ward and apologised

The victim’s father, Mokhtar Shafardin, 58, hoped his son would have a speedy recovery.
“I received a call from the school informing me my son was injured,” said the technician.

Police says a police report has been lodged

George Town district police chief ACP Gan Kong Meng said a police report has been lodged. Meanwhile, state education director Datuk Ahmad Tarmizi Kamaruddin said the incident was serious and the department would meet with the school’s student affairs department to sort the matter out.

Meanwhile, Penang Education Department director Datuk Ahmad Tarmizi Kamarrudin condemned the act and ordered the school's management to conduct an inquiry into the incident.
