He was jealous.
A 24-year-old man, who works as a car mechanic in Klang, allegedly poured petrol on his girlfriend and set her on fire at his home
The girl, also 24, has suffered 60% burns on her body and was brought to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah for treatment, according to a report in NST Online.
The NST Online report quoted Klang Selatan district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsul Amar Ramli saying that the victim had a fight with her boyfriend at his home in Andalas and was beaten by the man using a rubber pipe.
"The suspect proceeded to pour petrol on the victim's body before setting her alight," ACP Shamsul Amar told NST Online today, 8 June.
Police were informed about the horrendous act by the victim's 52-year-old mother who visited her daughter at the hospital yesterday
ACP Shamsul Amar said that the initial investigations have revealed that the man "acted in a fit of jealousy" and "failed to control his emotions".
"There a misunderstanding between the victim and suspect, who have been in a relationship for a year. The suspect failed to control his emotions and hit the victim with a rubber pipe, poured petrol on her body and set her alight," he said.
The boyfriend has been detained to facilitate investigations
He was also brought to the hospital with the victim for treatment as his hands were wounded during the incident, ACP Shamsul Amar informed.
He added that police will remand the suspect to facilitate investigations under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
