PETALING JAYA: When dawn breaks on Malaysia Thursday morning, the country's population will have broken the 30 million number.

According to the population clock published on the Malaysia Statistics Department website, the country has 29,999,530 citizens at 6.43pm Wednesday.

This projection does not take into consideration factors such as natural disasters or epidemics which can significantly affect death estimates. A rough calculation based on the projected growth rate of an average of 1 per cent, the Malaysian population will at most be 65 million in 2100. By 2040, the Statistics Department projects that the number of Malays will increase to 20.9 million (54 per cent of overall population), followed by other Bumiputras, 5.2 million (14 per cent) and the Chinese, 7.1 million (18 per cent).
