A Malaysian intern at the Kaohsiung Medical University allegedly set a fire and stabbed a hospital staff member multiple times before jumping off a sixth-floor balcony early yesterday morning.

Lin Wei-yang (林瑋揚) was declared dead at 5am yesterday and had sustained extensive bone fractures, police said.

Before jumping, Lin set the hospital's changing room on fire

It was said that at around 3.30am yesterday, the hospital's alarm was triggered by thick smoke in the men's changing room, located on the second floor of a building.

Lin allegedly set fire to the changing room in the dental clinic on the second floor of the hospital’s W building before locking the door behind him and leaving.

Police said they suspected Lin set the fire to divert attention, because he subsequently went to the third floor of the C building and repeatedly stabbed a 46-year-old staff member on duty, surnamed Wu (吳). Wu’s neck was also slashed.

The Malaysian had reportedly slashed a male worker named Wu on the neck at the Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital before jumping from the sixth floor.

“A worker from the information room, identified only as Wu, who went to check on the smoke, bumped into Lin and was slashed in the neck with a knife. “Soon after, Lin fell to his death from the sixth floor of the building,” the daily reported.

A nurse allegedly saw Lin leaving the building and he told her: “I’m going to kill myself; [you] go in the room.”

Meanwhile, the wounded Wu managed to reach the hospital’s blood bank and called for help before passing out from loss of blood. He was in critical condition, police said at the time of going to press.

Lin made his way to the sixth-floor balcony, recorded his death note and jumped

Lin abandoned his knife and clothes as he fled the crime scene and made his way to the sixth floor of an adjacent building, where he set up a video camera on a balcony railing and made the recording, police said.

Police said 28 year-old Lin made a video recording apologizing to Taiwanese and saying that he hoped Taiwan-Malaysia relations would not suffer because of his actions.

Police found a note, written in Chinese, from the deceased, Lin Wei Yang reported to be a seventh year anaesthesiology student at Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan which said "Reject first aid, agree to donate organs, cremation, thank you."

Lin face financial troubles, study difficulties and received intensive counselling sessions

Lin was said to be in the seventh year of his medical studies in Kaohsiung Medical University, where he had deferred his studies once, purportedly over financial and study difficulties.

Lin Zhi Long, chief secretary of the university, claimed that the Malay-sian student had problems in his studies and found it hard to adapt to the new environment since entering the school.
