Malaysian Student Wins Runner-Up Prize In Beijing's Mandarin Public Speaking Competition
Another Malaysian student also won the consolation prize in the same competition.
A Malaysian student, Nur Afifah Elias, has won the runner-up prize in the Foreign Student Mandarin Public Speaking Competition 2017 in Beijing, China recently
Nur Afifah beat other participants from Russia, Italy, Sweden, Jamaica, Japan, and Thailand, among others
The finalists were invited to the stage to talk about their respective stories based on the theme, 'Chinese characters (hànzì) and I'.
After a fierce competition, the student from Japan was the ultimate winner while Nur Afifah took the runner-up spot. The third place went to a student from South Korea.
BH Online reported that Nur Afifah is currently a final student at the Beijing International Studies University. She was awarded a scholarship from Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) to study Mandarin.
Fellow compatriot, Lin Syahirah Hishamuddin, also won a consolation prize in the same competition
It was reported that Lin Syahirah, who hails from Banting, is a final year student at Beijing Language and Culture University.
The Education Malaysia-Beijing (EMB) Office said that the duo's achievements showed that Malaysian students are able to impress with their outstanding ability to master Mandarin
"This proves that the Malaysian government's effort, under the Education Ministry, to provide a platform for students to master Mandarin was a good decision," it said in a statement, as reported by Berita Harian.
It was revealed that a total of 322 Malaysian students are currently studying Mandarin at Beijing International Studies University and Beijing Language and Culture University.
