Malaysia, like many countries, is not spared from inflation caused by the pandemic and the Ukraine-Russia war.

With that in the backdrop, one Malaysian took it upon himself to see if he could go through a day in Kuala Lumpur with just RM10.

Documenting his journey in a one-minute video published yesterday, 26 October, TikTok food content creator @overeatmy shows a RM10 note to the camera as he begins the challenge.

"Malaysia's economy is pretty bad now, where a meal usually costs RM15 on average. But in this video, I'll be attempting to survive a day with just RM10," @overeatmy wrote in the caption.

Speaking to SAYS, Aaron, the person in the video, said he works and lives around Kepong.

For breakfast, he eats a packet of nasi lemak that costs only RM1, which he buys not far away from where he lives

The serving size of the nasi lemak does not seem to be too small, and it even comes with a thin slice of fried egg.

"The only thing I'm not liking is I don't get my coffee," he laments.

Aaron told SAYS that the nasi lemak stall is located on Jalan PJU10/1C in Damansara Damai.

Next, for lunch, he resorts to eating cup noodles that he buys from a mini market for RM2.

"This is barely sufficient for my lunch. But my strategy is to save enough money for a heavy dinner," he says, warning his followers, "Nutrition-wise, this is definitely not recommended. Do not try this."

After only having carbs the whole day, the budget challenger spends his remaining money at Mixed Rice Restaurant located in Bandar Menjalara, Kuala Lumpur

Taking a sizeable portion of veggies and sweet and sour meat, with his rice drenched with some curry, the meal comes up to RM6.60.

In total, Aaron spends a total of RM9.60 for the day.

"I call this challenge a success. I actually thought it was impossible, but I guess not," he concludes the video.

At the time of writing, the video has garnered over 660,000 views and 600 comments

Many netizens expressed their sadness over the high prices of food in Malaysia, with some saying that spending RM10 for food in a day is a reality for some.

"Don't let the politicians see this because they'll say citizens can survive a day with only RM10, so no need to increase the minimum wage," read one top comment.

"As a student in the middle of the city, this is not a challenge, it's literally a lifestyle," wrote a TikTok user, while another added, "'Do not try this', but I'm a student, bro."

"I [bought] rice, chicken, and vegetables (which amounted to) RM7 or RM8. And I [portioned] it for lunch and dinner. This [was] today around the Batu Caves area. Mamak nasi kandar [is] also the same price," a netizen said.
