M'sia Reveals First Glow-In-The-Dark Road Markings In Semenyih & Here's What People Think
The luminescent road paint serves as an alternative for road studs.
The Ministry of Works (KKR) has implemented the use of "glow-in-the-dark" or luminescent road paint in Hulu Langat, Semenyih
This new initiative was carried out by KKR, through the Hulu Langat public works department (JKR Hulu Langat), reported New Straits Times.
These road markings, which illuminate the intersection of Jalan Sungai Lalang and Jalan Sungai Tekali, were completed on 28 October.
This luminescent road paint is aimed at improving the safety of road users in the dark, especially for those who are unfamiliar with said roads
JKR Hulu Langat shared pictures of how the painted road markings look during the day and at night on their Facebook page.
At night, the markings glow a bright green, and as cars drive by, the lines grow paler.
Take a look here:
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi conducted an on-site inspection of the new road markings.
"Initiatives like this are found to be suitable for dark passageways without streetlights, with a durability of up to 10 hours in dark hours while still providing a good 'glow' effect even in rainy weather," he said in a Facebook post.
He also added that the ministry is still reviewing its overall effectiveness, including its high implementation cost.
Many Malaysians have praised the innovation, but some have also wondered if resources would be better put into existing white road markings
A netizen advocated for the nationwide implementation of glow-in-the-dark road markings for the safety of road users at night.
One netizen said that while it was necessary to have glow-in-the-dark markings, particularly in rural areas without streetlights, drivers should still be careful while on the road.
Meanwhile, some pointed out that the existing white road markings were sufficient if implemented more efficiently. On top of that, the implementation of the glow-in-the-dark markings is much more costly, as it would require regular maintenance to ensure its longevity.
