If charged with negligent homicide, he faces up to five years imprisonment.
A four-year-old girl from Sidoarjo, Indonesia died after being accidentally run over by her father last week
Identified only by their initials, the father, KF, dropped off his daughter, MS, at school on Wednesday, 25 July.
Unbeknownst to KF, MS had walked in front of the car when he started to drive. She went under the front right tire, and passed away after being taken to a hospital, Coconuts Jakarta reported.
Indonesian police strongly suspect that the man did not see his daughter in front of his car because he was distracted by his phone
East Java Police Spokesperson Frans Barung Mangera told Okezone that if this is proven to be the case, it is "clearly negligence."
He added that KF can be charged with Article 359 of the KUHP (Penal Code) for negligent homicide, which is punishable by up to five years imprisonment.
Still in shock, the victim's family have yet to make any police reports.
Since the accident, the Indonesian Traffic Police revealed their intention to raise public awareness about the dangers of using phones while driving
According to Coconuts Jakarta, the police department calls upon its officers to watch out for and get tough on anyone whose eyes are on their screens rather than on the road.
