Missing Boy's Case Gets Complicated With His Detained Father Changing His Story And His Lawyer

It’s been a week since Low Min You went missing and the case is getting more and more complicated with his father changing his story – and his lawyer. A friend of the father has also been remanded for questioning.

The police remain baffled over the lack of any information on the boy, and it is now believed the boy, nicknamed You You, could have gone missing earlier than it was initially thought. Even worse, his father Yee Sheng, 31, has given conflicting stories about what happened the night the boy went missing.

Sources said the man is now saying that he had stopped at the roadside along the Jalan Tuaran bypass at about 4.20am on May 9. He said he then got off his four-wheel drive truck to urinate by the side of the road and to smoke a cigarette while Min You slept in the back seat. Yee Sheng said he had his back to the vehicle the whole time, according to the sources. When he returned to the truck, he said, he noticed that Min You was missing.

He had initially told the police that he had stopped at a downtown petrol station to answer the call of nature and that when he returned minutes later, the truck had disappeared with his son inside. He had also told the police the truck was found several hours later at the Atkinson clock tower in the Signal Hill area, some 2km away from the petrol station, and that Min You was not in it.

With this new twist, it appears that the three-year-old boy had gone missing at least an hour earlier than initially reported, and some 15km from the downtown area. On top of that, a 25-second video clip is being widely circulated on WhatsApp with a woman claiming that Min You had been found at a condominium in Bukit Padang here.

The unidentified woman also claimed in the video that Yee Sheng was responsible for the boy’s kidnapping and that he would be sent to jail for 15 years. Previously, there were messages circulated on social media that Min You had been spotted with another couple and that he was at a hotel in Keningau. All these stories have been debunked by the police.

A couple taking a closer look at the missing person poster of Low Ming You printed on an A4 paper put up at several locations in Kota Kinabalu, Penampang and several other locations. Family members offered a RM20,000 reward for the 3-year-old's safe return.

In yet another twist, Yee Sheng and his wife Yong Siou Yee, 26, who are both under police remand, have dropped lawyer Ram Singh as their counsel. They have appointed another lawyer, Ronny Cham, to represent them. Ram represented the couple during their remand hearing on Thursday.

He declined to comment on the move, saying only that it was up to the couple to decide who they wanted as counsel. Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib said the police are verifying if Min You had indeed gone missing from the Jalan Tuaran bypass instead of the petrol station. “There are a lot of reasons why we wanted the parents remanded,” he said. The police have also detained a 31-year-old friend of Yee Sheng.

Hamza said the man surrendered himself at the Kota Kinabalu police station in Karamunsing on Wednesday night. “We believe that he can help shed some light on the case,” he said. Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm Jauteh Dikun said the search for Min You continues unabated and reminded the public not to spread rumours about the case.
