Malaysian cosmetic entrepreneur, model, and musician Siew Pui Yi has launched a multi-million ringgit scholarship programme to allow underprivileged students to achieve their academic dreams
In an Instagram Reel uploaded on 14 February, Siew, popularly known to her fans as Ms Puiyi, said the reason for introducing the USD1 million (about RM4.39 million) scholarship programme is to give back to society.
The singer-DJ said that her childhood dream was to study medicine, in the hopes of becoming a surgeon one day.
However, her underprivileged background and the fact that she lived in a rural area caused her to give up her dream. She said she had to juggle work, studies, and a modelling career, all of which led her to skip meals and suffer from lack of sleep.
"In the end, I couldn't pursue my dream to become a surgeon because of many factors, such as I [didn't] have enough funding for my studies, my family wasn't privileged enough to do it (sponsor my tuition fees), and I couldn't find any scholarships [in time]," she recounted.
"But now that I'm able to make a difference, I wish to give back to society by starting up this scholarship for students who need it most," said the former adult model
In collaboration with Educapital Foundation, Siew will be giving out USD1 million worth of scholarships for underprivileged students from all around the world.
"Each student will be granted USD1,000 (about RM4,400) to pursue whichever education field they desire. They are provided with access to financial hardship funds while they are in school, as well as business start-up grants upon graduation," Siew shared.
A look on the scholarship application website found that photos of Siew are plastered all over the homepage and the "Apply Now" button is located above a photo of her chest.
