The appointment was made due to the government's confidence in the former prime minister's ability to lead strategies on national recovery.

Former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has been appointed as the National Recovery Council chairperson with ministerial rank

The Cabinet decided on this on 1 September

In a statement today, 4 September, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali said that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has been informed of the appointment of the Bersatu president.

"The appointment was made on the basis of the government's confidence in Muhyiddin's ability to lead strategies on national recovery, in order to achieve the best economic impact and restore the lives of the people who were severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic," Zuki said in the statement.

"The government congratulates Muhyiddin on this appointment."
