Savariamal, Who Lives Alone, Went Missing On Monday. Her Family Thought She Went To Visit Her Son In Penang.

Her nephew R. Kumar, 42, said the family noticed that the 62-year-old had been missing since Monday. “We thought she had gone to visit her son in Penang."

Savariamal had been living on the 16th floor of Block 11 since 2008 and worked as a sweeper there.

Neighbours In The Flat Thought They Heard Cries For Help But Nobody Knew Where The Sounds Were Coming From

"Neighbours informed the family that cries for help could be heard earlier in the week but nobody could pinpoint where they were coming from,” he said when met here yesterday.

When Contractors Checked, They Could Not Find Anything Wrong And Told The Residents The Noises Were "Ghostly" In Nature

Contractors from Kuala Lumpur City Hall arrived at the flats on Tuesday after receiving complaints from residents about noises coming from the elevator.

Residents Also Complained Of A Strong Stench Coming From The Elevators, But Dismissed It As Rodents

Meanwhile, a resident, Zaid Sakadi, 31, said the elevator had jammed on Monday morning.

“Most of us noticed the smell but we thought that it was either from the garbage or a dead rat,” said Zaid who lives on the seventh floor.

When The Stench Grew Too Strong To Bear, Fireman Went To Investigate. They Found The Decomposed Body Of Savariamal At The Bottom Of The Elevator Shaft.

On Thursday, the stench became worse and a complaint was lodged with the police and Fire and Rescue Department.

Upon arrival at 7pm, a thorough check was conducted and Savariamal’s body was discovered at 10.25pm.

Savariamal's Sisters Were Seen Outside The Lift Trying To Reach Her By Telephone

Savariamal’s relatives, who lived in an adjacent block, rushed to the scene after a neighbour told them that the body of a woman had been found and identified her at 10.25pm.

Her sisters were earlier seen outside the lift lobby trying to reach her by telephone.

Savariamal's Family Received A Call From The Police On Thursday Night

Prakash, who lives with his family in Penang, received a call from the police on Thursday night informing him about Savariamal’s death.

The body was identified the next morning.

Residents Say The Elevators In That Block Frequently Jammed

Last Saturday, Prakash’s uncle Gopal Perumal was stuck in the adjacent elevator with three other residents for three hours before help arrived.

Doctors Say Savariamal Did Not Suffer From Broken Bones From The Fall. But How Did She Fell Down The Shaft?

Her son, Prakash Suppiah, 30, said doctors at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) told him that his mother did not sustain any broken bones from the fall.
Her death certificate stated the cause as “chest injury due to fall from high” (sic).

“My mother suffered from high-blood pressure, diabetes and heart-blockage, but she had no problems working,” Prakash said.

“Ask anyone and they would know her. It really puzzles me how she fell down the shaft,” he added.

Zaid said the elevators in the block frequently jammed and suspected that Savariamal might have slipped into the shaft when she tried to climb out of the elevator that had descended halfway.

Authorities Were Unwilling To Provide A Comment On The Case

Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said: “Let the police complete their investigations. We will not rule out foul play.”
