KUALA LUMPUR: A 38-year-old man was killed while five others seriously injured when a gunman fired a barrage of bullets towards them in front of a restaurant in Jalan Ipoh, here, this morning.

Sentul police chief Assistant Commissioner Zakaria Pagan said the incident occurred between 4.30am and 5am.

A group of six men were having drinks near the Uma Rani restaurant in 4th Mile, Jalan Ipoh, when the gunman alighted from a Perodua Myvi and proceeded to shoot the six using a semi-automatic pistol.

Sentul OCPD Asst Comm Zakaria Pagan said that all six victims were having breakfast at the restaurant when the drive-by shooting happened between 4.30am and 5am on Saturday.

The Suspect Fired Seven Shots At The Group Using What Is Believed To Be A Semi-Automatic Pistol

Sentul police chief Assistant Commisioner Zakaria Pagan said the suspect then opened fire, using what is believed to be a semi-automatic pistol.

"Initial investigations revealed that a man alighted from a Perodua Myvi and fired seven shots at the victims using a semi-automatic gun.

"He then got back into the car, which was driven by another suspect, and fled the scene.

The Six Victims, Aged 22 To 51, Were Rushed To The Kuala Lumpur Hospital. 38-Year-Old S.Saravanan Was Pronounced Dead Upon Arrival.

"The victims were rushed to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital, where one of them was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The remaining five, aged between 22 and 51, suffered varying degrees of injuries, as some were shot in the hand, leg, shoulder and cheek.

29-Year-Old S. Vijay, Who Is The Brother Of The Deceased, Managed To Run To Safety During The Shooting

Recounting those terrifying moments, the younger brother of the dead victim in the incident said he was shot at by the suspect but the bullet missed him. S.Vijay, 29, said in the incident, he was with his brother, S.Saravanan, 38, and four other friends at the restaurant having a meal.

A man approached us and started shooting, and I was shot at but the bullet hit the wall of the restaurant,” he told Bernama when met at Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) mortuary here today. According to him, in his haste to flee, he fell into a drain near the restaurant but he managed to take a look at the suspect. “I saw the suspect was a thin, tall man wearing a cap, I tried to look at his face but I could not identify him,” he said.

“I then rushed to see my brother who was already dead from a shot while four others were injured, I carried my brother inside the car while the rest took the ambulance to HKL,” he said.

According to him, he was not sure of the real motive of the suspect. “My brother and I have been operating a phone shop in Sentul in the past two years,” he said. Vijay said his brother's body would be brought back to their house in Ampang after the post-mortem in HKL today.

Another Victim Known As Murugan Is A Father Of Five Who Worked As A Personal Driver

Meanwhile, a relative of one of the victims who was only identified as Giva said one of the injured victims identified as Murugan worked as a personal driver and has five children. “As soon as I received a call from his children, I rushed to HKL to look at his condition and as far as I know, he has no enemies,” he said.

Speaking to FMT, Uma Rani Restaurant owner K Ramalingam said the incident happened at about 4am this morning. “Eight customers came in a group to have their breakfast. After 10 minutes, a man walked into the restaurant and started shooting at my customers.

“One customer, an Indian man, died on the spot and four others were left injured. The other three people ran away when the assailant started firing shots,” he said.

Asked if it was an incident sparked by gang or business rivalry, Ramalingam declined to comment on the matter, saying he would leave the matter to the police to investigate. “I have operated this restaurant for 15 years and this is the first time something like has happened,” he said.

According To Sentul Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Zakaria Pagan, Police Are Investigating The Possibility Of A Turf War Between Rival Secret Societies

Zakaria said police recovered seven bullet casings from the crime scene, and the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

It is understood that police are investigating the possibility of a turf war between rival secret societies.
