Poverty is Barisan Nasional's main weapon in keeping Sabah and Sarawak in its fold, while Parti Keadilan Rakyat is working on strategies to wean the various ethnic communities there off their dependence on the ruling coalition, its leaders said.

PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution (pic) pointed out that despite Sabah and Sarawak having different ethnic communities, they all had one thing in common – poverty.
He pointed out that both states had a large number of families living in poverty.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat Has Pledged To Fight For Greater Autonomy In The States
Image via themalaysianinsider.comParti Keadilan Rakyat has pledged to fight for autonomy in Sabah and Sarawak, including a fairer distribution of oil royalty, its president Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said today.
"However, it is pertinent to note that although we have enjoyed 56 years of independence, Sabah and Sarawak still lag behind Peninsular Malaysia in terms of infrastructure," she said.
"BN made many promises to the people of Sabah and Sarawak in the run-up to the 13th General Election and in the previous polls. Have these pledges been kept?"
She cited Budget 2014 as an example, where development in Sabah and Sarawak was low on the list of priorities for Putrajaya.
Pakatan Rakyat is also determined to fight for 20% oil royalty to be paid to Sabah, Sarawak, Kelantan and Terengganu.

Dr Wan Azizah revealed that one of the three PKR vice-president posts would be occupied by a party member from either Sabah or Sarawak.
"We want to encourage a more inclusive participation from our party members in Sabah and Sarawak," she said when officiating the PKR special national congress at the Dewan Raja Muda Musa.

He said the PKR central leadership would organise a workshop in Sabah and Sarawak next year ahead of planned state elections.
"We are going down to the ground to familiarise ourselves with the constituencies there and slowly wean the rakyat off their dependency on BN.

"At the end of the workshop, we will grade the constituencies in Sabah and Sarawak based on the difficulty in winning federal and state seats.
"A is for constituencies or assemblies which we won or lost by a slim majority. B for areas where a little additional work is required to win while C is for areas where BN is invincible and the chances of winning are non-existent."
