A 38-year-old man in Shah Alam, Selangor has been charged with murder for fatally beating his wife with a dumbbell last Thursday, 14 December

According to Utusan Malaysia, the accused, Izzat Saat, was brought to the Shah Alam Magistrate’s Court yesterday, 21 December, and charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for the murder of his 33-year-old wife, Nurul Qurraisyia Zulkafli.

He was accused of committing the offence at his residence in Section 32, Shah Alam, around 10:30pm.

The charge was read before Magistrate Farah Rosnan, and the accused nodded in acknowledgement.

No plea was recorded as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

The case proceedings were conducted by deputy public prosecutor Saidah Fasihah Che Yussoff, while the accused was represented by lawyers Rezal Mazli Abdul Muin and M Hafiz Zainol Abidin.

Last week, the police received a report from the accused, who had taken his wife to a hospital, claiming that she was unconscious due to a seizure

"However, a medical examination at the hospital revealed injuries to her body and head," Utusan Malaysia quoted Shah Alam district police chief ACP Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim as saying.

The police detained him on the same day and obtained a seven-day remand.

It is understood that Izzat and his wife recently married in April this year. However, the victim, a lecturer at a vocational college, resided separately in Sarawak.

It was reported that the fatal incident took place after the victim travelled to Shah Alam to attend her brother-in-law's wedding.

Izzat, who is unemployed, has two past criminal records related to assault and drugs

The accused had also tested positive for methamphetamine, a highly addictive psychostimulant drug, last week.

The magistrate has set 19 February next year for mention, case management, and submission of reports.

If convicted, faces the death penalty or imprisonment for up to 40 years with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.
