On the high electricity bill at his official residence, Seri Perdana in Putrajaya, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak says it is unavoidable.

"How to avoid such expenses? That is not my residence but the prime minister's residence. If heads of government come, are we supposed to dine in the dark? If the Chinese prime minister comes, are we to dine by candle light?" Najib said.

Utility bills for the official residences of both Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin amounted to more than RM3.5 million last year, said an opposition lawmaker.

Amid Putrajaya’s call for the public to embrace austerity, taxpayers are paying about RM8,500 a day for the power bills of both the prime minister and his deputy, a DAP lawmaker revealed today.

"If you break it down, this shows that every month, the government spends RM186,482 a month and if you divide it by 365 days, it is RM6,130.90 a day or almost RM250 an hour just on electricity bills. "For RM72,121.55 a month or RM2,371.12 per day."
The Official Residences' Utility Bills Have Increased By 40% Since 2010
"In a written reply in 2010 it was revealed that approximately RM6,000 was spent a day from 2006 to 2010 on the prime minister and his deputy's electricity and water bills.
"Three years on, there has been a 40% increase in their usage," slammed Loke.

"The land on which Najib's official residence is built measures 42.5 hectares, which is almost three times larger than the land the White House stands on, which is only 18 hectares."

DAP Says There Is No Effort From The Govt To Reduce Spending
Anthony Loke Siew Foke (DAP – Rasah), in disclosing this, described high utilities bills as wasteful, and chided Najib for not walking the talk in asking the public to practise prudence.
"There does not seem to be any effort on the establishment's part to reduce government spending," he told reporters in the Parliament lobby today.

"This is shocking. How can the Prime Minister ask the people to tighten their belts when he is extravagant in his spending. There is so much wastage too," he said.
"After the 6% GST is implemented on goods and services which include electricity bills, Najib's electricity bill payment will be even higher," Loke said, referring to the announcement by Najib last Friday of the Goods and Services Tax.

"Be more prudent and reduce your utilitiy bill charges. It is also good for the environment."
