Samous Chok, the owner of a popular roasted pork business, has apologised on behalf of his father for abusing a dog in an interview last Thursday, 23 November

Speaking to BFM Caijin last week, the Chinese programme under the local business radio station, the owner of Heng Kee Roasted Pork admitted that what his father did was "absolutely wrong", but argued that members of the public have misunderstood the motive behind his father's action.

"Our family does not condone (animal abuse). However, my dad's intent was not to abuse the dog, but to separate the dog from other strays so that they would not fight each other again. Many of the strays were injured with bite wounds.

"My dad did not consult us when he was doing this (separating the dog from other strays) because he is a very stubborn person.

"If the incident happened again, the first thing I would do is to apologise. After my public apology, I would hand the case over to the police for investigation," said Chok.

Chok, who is the third generation owner of Heng Kee Roasted Pork, was responding to a question on what he would do differently to manage the public relation (PR) crisis over the controversy that happened in May.

When asked whether his dad's controversy has affected his business, Chok said it did not

"In fact, more people visited my social media pages after the incident.

"There were supporters and haters. There were also netizens who visited my profile to find out what happened because (people know) it was not my fault. I was not the person who was involved in (abusing the dog)," said Chok, who graduated with a Master's degree from the University of Northumbria in the UK.

In May, a video of an elderly man driving a car with a dog chained to it went viral.

A witness told SAYS that the man in the video was a roast chef at a popular siu yuk restaurant in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan.

The man was eventually arrested and charged in court.

Following a two-month trial, Chok's 62-year-old father changed his plea from innocence to guilty, admitting to the crime of abusing the dog, reported China Press.

He was fined RM20,000 for his offence, the least severe penalty under Section 29 of the Animal Welfare Act 2015.

Chok gained nationwide attention during the pandemic for his TikTok dancing videos. Several posts, including the most popular one featuring him dancing to BLACKPINK's Pink Venom, amassed over one million views each.

He came under fire in May when members of the public discovered that he was the son of the man who dragged a dog with a car for 2km in Port Dickson, leading to the dog's fatal injuries the next day.
