Sarawak will start teaching Year One students Mathematics and Science in English from 2020 onwards
New Straits Times reported that 1,046 out of a total of 1,265 primary schools in the state will take part in the programme.
According to Sarawak Education, Science, and Technological Research Minister Datuk Seri Michael Manyin Jawong, the remaining 219 schools are of the Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) variety, and have indicated that they prefer to continue teaching the subjects in Mandarin.
Manyin also shared that a total of 2,657 teachers will be trained to teach both subjects in English
The total comprises of 1,005 Science teachers, 1,275 Mathematics teachers, and 377 teachers of both subjects, reported The Star.
The teaching module will be prepared by the federal Education Ministry and should be ready by August.
Additionally, the textbooks will be printed by the state and will be based on the Dual Language Programme (DLP) textbooks.
The implementation will start with Year One students as the state cannot be "too ambitious", Manyin said
He reiterated that the state will not be making a U-turn on the implementation and he called on the public to be supportive of the programme, reported The Star.
However, he also mentioned that he did not anticipate any objections to it, as a lot of people have said they were "waiting too long" for its implementation.
"This is good for Sarawak, good for our future and good for our children. And this idea is not from us; it's from the current Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad," he said.
