SUKE Contractors Fined A Total Of RM180,000 Over Falling Concrete Slab Incident
Both companies have agreed to improve safety procedures and work practices.
Contractors of the Sungai Besi-Ulu Kelang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) project were fined for failing to ensure safety at the highway construction site when a concrete slab fell and hit a car on 19 September
In a statement by the Malaysian Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), main contractor MRCB Builders Sdn Bhd was fined RM80,000 while subcontractor Makna Setia Sdn Bhd was fined RM100,000.
Both contractors were penalised under Section 34B(1) and Section 34C(1) of the CIDB Act 1994 (Act 520).
According to the law, it is a contractor's duty to ensure the safety of building and construction works either during or after construction.
The CIDB investigation found that the subcontractor did not follow proper procedures and had hired an unaccredited site supervisor
The subcontractor was ordered to make improvements in safety procedures, as well as to conduct a security audit by a third party on the construction site.
"Throughout the investigation, both companies have cooperated well, including pledging to improve procedures and safer work practices," the statement reads.
No mention of compensation for anyone affected by the incident was found in the statement.
