Taxi drivers in Klang Valley can now report directly to the police, thanks to a new update in the MyTeksi smartphone application

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the launch of the application was an initiative outlined through the National Blue Ocean Strategy 7 programme, together with the taxi drivers.

The updated app will feature a 'Report to PDRM' button, which allows more than 10,000 drivers who are using the app to report a crime, accident or provide a tip-off while they are on the road

At least 10,000 taxi drivers utilising the MyTeksi smartphone application will be able to report a crime, an accident or provide a tip-off in just two clicks via the app. By doing so they will be able to speak directly to the police operation centre of the district where the taxi driver is in.

IGP Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said that the public safety initiative enables taxi drivers to act as the eyes and ears of the police force because "crime prevention is everybody's business"

“This is a great collaboration as taxi drivers are often on the road and they would be able to witness incidents such as crimes, accidents and so on. What they can do is inform us and we will take it from there,” Khalid said at the launch of the app at the federal police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The feature could also enable drivers to help their passengers report a crime as well as for drivers to alert the police if they are confronted with suspicious behaviour from passengers

MyTeksi general manager Adelene Foo said taxi drivers usually worked between 12 and 15 hours during the day and night.

“So they will be the perfect people to be the eyes and ears of the police. Based on our research, one taxi driver has an average of 10 to 15 passengers a day, which means they fetch at least 3,000 passengers a year,” she said.

The feature will only be implemented in Klang Valley for now, with plans to have it implemented nationwide if response is positive

The police recently briefed and trained 500 taxi drivers in the city so they could link the community and police in preserving public safety through the application.

The drivers were given training on what they should look out for when they are on the road. Khalid also said that for taxi drivers on their role and responsibility would be done gradually.

Launched in 2011, MyTeksi has made it easier for passengers to get ahold of taxi service while ensuring the safety of drivers and passengers, as it stores information of both parties

“The passengers will know who is driving them around and vice versa. That is the most important thing when getting a cab as they are all strangers to each other," Khalid said. “We are doing this to make sure that everyone is comfortable with taking a taxi or driving one, even in the middle of the night,” he added.
