Human Rights Activist Irene Fernandez Has Passed Away On 31 March 2014
Human rights activist and Tenaganita Executive Director Irene Fernandez passed away today due to heart failure.
Fernandez was a PKR vice-president during the initial years of the party’s foundation.
The 67-year-old social activist was also Tenaganita’s co-founder and director. Tenaganita is an NGO that champions migrant worker rights.
Irene was a vocal champion of migrant rights, as well as a human rights advocate. She is also a strong supporter of other causes like free and fair election, and women's rights.

Fernandez, 67, was hospitalised in the Coronary Care Unit of the Serdang Hospital last Tuesday. She was brought to the hospital after suffering breathing difficulties on her way to the Bersih People’s Tribunal on the 13th General Election.

Her sister Josie said Irene had died in the Coronary Care Unit ward surrounded by her husband Joseph Paul, daughters Katrina and Tania, son Camerra Jose, as well as herself and their other sister Aegile.

"The doctor had spoken to us before that. He said that her brain was still alert but it was her heart. "They also tried CPR for about 30 minutes but they couldn't save her," she added.

Irene Fernandez Will Be Cremated And Her Ashes Will Be Buried Alongside Her Patients In Her Hometown Of Sungai Petani

A funeral service will be held at the Divine Mercy Church in Shah Alam. She will then be cremated and her ashes will be buried alongside their parents in their hometown, Sungai Petani, as she had wished.
