Human rights activist and Tenaganita Executive Director Irene Fernandez passed away today due to heart failure.
astroawani.comFernandez was a PKR vice-president during the initial years of the party’s foundation.
The 67-year-old social activist was also Tenaganita’s co-founder and director. Tenaganita is an NGO that champions migrant worker rights.
Irene was a vocal champion of migrant rights, as well as a human rights advocate. She is also a strong supporter of other causes like free and fair election, and women's rights.

Fernandez, 67, was hospitalised in the Coronary Care Unit of the Serdang Hospital last Tuesday. She was brought to the hospital after suffering breathing difficulties on her way to the Bersih People’s Tribunal on the 13th General Election.

Josie, who is also a human rights activist, said her sister's remains would be first taken to her home in Seremban and then to the family's Subang Jaya home on Wednesday morning. A funeral service will be held at the Divine Mercy Church in Shah Alam. She will then be cremated and her ashes will be buried alongside their parents in their hometown, Sungai Petani, as she had wished.
