37-Year-Old Man Steals RM22,575 Worth Of LEGO Figurines From Legoland Malaysia
He also stole a coffee tray, throw pillow and bed runner! Truly WTF!
It seems like Christmas came (and went) quite early for a 37-year-old who almost made away with RM22,575 worth of LEGO toy displays from the Legoland Resort Malaysia in Nusajaya, Johor
In what could be described as the first case of LEGO toy theft in Malaysia, the suspect was arrested by a police team on early Monday, 23 November, morning.
According to Nusajaya Deputy Police Chief Deputy Superintendent Ismail Dollah, police arrested him at 2.15am in his home in Jementah, Segamat, after the Legoland Hotel management lodged a report, The Ratyat Post reported.
The LEGO thief, who was the hotel's guest, had stolen four Legoland Resort Malaysia merchandise and seven LEGO figurines.
Among the figurine displays recovered by police were the popular LEGO Dragon, LEGO Monkey and also the LEGO Pirate King.
Initial investigations revealed that the suspect had earlier stayed at the Legoland Hotel for a night on Saturday, and started to steal the LEGO displays before checking out.
“We acted immediately after the report was lodged and managed to apprehend the suspect, who is a lorry driver, in less than 24 hours,” Deputy Superintendent Ismail Dollah said at the Nusajaya District Police Headquarters in Nusa Bestari here today.
According to a report in The Rakyat Post, the suspect selected elaborate LEGO brick displays on the hotel’s wall before pulling them off and putting them inside a large bag. It was learnt that the Legoland Malaysia Resorts security team were notified of the suspect’s "act" as he was caught via the resort’s CCTV cameras.
As per the hotel’s management SOP, they then tried to contact the suspect to facilitate the return of the missing Lego displays. However, the suspect did not respond within 24 hours and a police report was lodged by the hotel’s management.
Police also seized the suspect's car that was said to have been used to ferry the stolen items that also included a hotel directory, coffee tray, throw pillow and bed runner, the NST Online reported
Ismail said the suspect was brought back to the Nusajaya district police headquarters where the suspect also tested positive for amphetamines during a routine urine test.
“However, the suspect did not have any previous or existing criminal records,” he said, adding that the suspect has been remanded for three days starting today to facilitate investigations.
Police have classified the case under Section 380 of the Penal Code for property theft.
