15 March 2014: A search team hunts for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, in the Indian Ocean, near the tip of Sumatra Island, Indonesia. The flight has not been found even after 10 months into its disappearance.

16 March 2014: A girl smiling as other girls apply coloured paint on her face during Holi celebrations in Chennai, India. Holi, also known as the Festival of Colours, heralds the beginning of spring and is celebrated all over India.

7 April 2014: Oscar Pistorius getting emotional during his trial in Pretoria, South Africa. Pistorius took the witness stand in his own defense for the shooting of his girlfriend in 2013. He was later sentenced to five years in prison.

13 April 2014: Sparks flowing past a person trying to put out flames during a forest fire in Valparaiso, Chile. The fires displaced thousands of people and killed more than a dozen people.

15 April 2014: Maryam Hosseinzadeh, right, and her husband Abdolghani, left, removing the noose from the neck of blindfolded Bilal who was convicted of murdering their son Abdollah in the northern city of Nour, Iran. Bilal who was convicted of killing Abdollah Hosseinzadeh, was pardoned by the victim's family moments before being executed.

16 April 2014: South Korean coast guard officers and rescue team members trying to rescue passengers from the ferry Sewol. The ferry sank with 476 people aboard, mostly secondary school students. 295 died as the Sewol sank, leading to widespread anger and criticism of the actions of the crew, captain, owners, and government regulators.

10 May 2014: Austrian artist Conchita Wurst thrusting her trophy in the air after winning the Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen with the song 'Rise Like a Phoenix'.

13 May 2014: A man kissing his son after he was rescued from a collapsed coal mine in Manisa, Turkey. The mine explosion and ensuing fire killed hundreds of people.

14 May 2014: Yusuf Yerkel, an adviser to Turkey€'s prime minister, kicking a protester during a visit to the site of a mining disaster that killed hundreds of people. Mr. Yerkel later apologised for the incident.

20 May 2014: A woman fleeing from riot police officers in Nairobi, Kenya. Hundreds of Nairobi University students took to the streets to protest a proposed increase in student fees.

28 May 2014: He Liang riding his homemade suitcase scooter along a street in Changsha, China. He spent 10 years modifying the suitcase into a motor-driven scooter.

4 June 2014: A health worker giving a polio vaccine to children in Lahore, Pakistan.

6 June 2014: Sikhs wielding swords during their clash inside the complex of the holy Sikh shrine, the Golden Temple, in the northern Indian city of Amritsar.

7 July 2014: A man being rescued from the rubble following a reported barrel-bomb attack in Aleppo, Syria.

19 July 2014: A body lies in a wheat field, still strapped to a seat, at the site of the crash of MH17 carrying 298 people from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur in Grabove, in rebel-held east Ukraine. MH17 fell from the sky in pieces, presumably shot down with all 298 passengers and crew dead, as debris scattered across a rural area controlled by pro-Russian separatists.

3 September 2014: An 18-year-old Mangli Munda getting married to a stray dog in order to pass the evil spirits to the animal. The wedding was hastily organised by village elders after a local guru led Mangli's parents to believe that the teenager possessed ill-luck and that marrying a man would bring destruction to the family and her community.
