In CCTV footage that has gone viral, a man was caught leaping over a congregation of women performing their Subuh prayers before taking off with a purse containing RM60 and a phone

The theft happened around 5.55am at Kasar Mosque in Pasir Mas, Kelantan on Thursday, 14 December.

The 18-second video showed the man lurking behind the women before leaping across the second row while they were prostrating in prayer. In a matter of seconds, he had snatched up a purse and fled before the women looked up.

According to a New Straits Times report, the purse - which contained RM60 and a mobile phone - was located in the front row and belonged to a woman in her 60s.

Referring to the CCTV footage, mosque treasurer Said Kamaruzaman said that the suspect seemed to have planned the theft beforehand as he was initially seen in the men's section of the mosque

"From the footage, the unknown man appeared to be preparing for Subuh prayers with the rest of the congregation, but during the first rakaat, he entered the women's section," he said.

While cases of stolen motorcycles and cars were previously caught on CCTV, Said revealed that it has never captured a theft in the prayer hall

Following the incident, Said reminded mosque patrons to be cautious and wary of their belongings.

Meanwhile, Pasir Mas deputy police chief Superintendent Ismail Jusoh said that they have yet to receive a report on the matter.
