1. In Bintulu, four armed robbers were shot dead
Police shot dead four men who were high on the wanted list for armed robberies at an oil palm plantation on Friday.
The 1am incident at Km 42 of the Bintulu-Miri route occurred after three police cars had chased the suspects' car from Bintulu town.
Police have been tracking the group, which was linked to at least 28 cases in Bintulu involving four to five armed masked men, for the past month.
2. In Petaling Jaya, 3 lost hikers were rescued at FRIM
ire and rescue workers retrieved three lost hikers in the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) forest reserve on New Year's Day.
The Star Online reported that Leong Mun Kin, 48, Cheah Mee Lan, 45, and Lim Saw Fong, 37, made a distress call upon realising they were lost after several hours of walking in the forest reserve.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director Mohd Sani Harul said a distress call was received at 8.10am.
3. In Kota Kinabalu, two brothers drowned while swimming
Two brothers drowned while swimming in a pond at Kampung Simpudu, here. The victims were identified as Davis Ching Meng, 10, and Rony Chiu Meng, 12.
District Fire and Rescue chief Dunstan Peter said the department received a distress call at 12.22pm and despatched a rescue team to the scene. Peter said the siblings were believed to have gone swimming without their parents’ knowledge.
The bodies have been taken to the district hospital for a post-mortem.
4. A new northern KTM Komuter service was launched
A statement posted on KTM Komuter's Twitter handle said that the train will stop at 13 stations through Penang, Kedah and Perlis. It is a 157.8km trip that will take about 105 minutes to complete one-way, the statement added.
The new train ride will stop at the following stations (in order): Butterworth, Bukit Tengah, Bukit Mertajam, Tasik Gelugor, Sungai Petani, Gurun, Kobah, Alor Setar, Anak Bukit, Kodiang, Arau, Bukit Ketri and Padang Besar.

Three members of the Royal Malaysian Police Volunteer Reserve (SSPDRM) were injured after being hit by ‘Mat Rempit’ during an operation on road bullies at the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Highway, near The Light here, early on Friday.
Northeast District police chief ACP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said in the 4am incident, the suspects refused to stop his motorcycle during the roadblock operation and hit SSPDRM members, who one of them is woman.
“The incident occurred during an operation after the New Year celebration.
6. Bukit Aman's elite squad Special Actions Unit (UTK), which celebrated its 41st anniversary on Friday in Cheras, will soon have its own administrative building and have new assets as well
This is the pledge given by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to recognise the sacrifices made by Bukit Aman’s elite squad, which celebrated its 41st anniversary yesterday.
The Deputy Prime Minister said the unit would also be better equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to meet the demands of current challenges. Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is also Home Minister, said members of the unit would be sent for training abroad with other elite groups to hone their skills further.
The UTK was officially formed on Jan 1, 1975, comprising 100 men who were among the best in the force. Today, there are over 300 men and women serving in the squad.
7. Heavy rain caused landslide at the Kampung Bako Hulu Muslim cemetery, causing 100 graves to shift from their original locations
Some 100 graves at the Kampung Bako Hulu Muslim cemetery, about 30km from here, have been affected by heavy rain.
Village head Wahid Sani, 61, said the abnormal heavy rain since Friday night caused soil erosion around the cemetery, which is located on a hill.
“When the earth caved in, there were movements in the position of graves," he said. He said the cemetery had existed for 160 years, just like the village.
8. Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is currently in Saudi Arabia for a three-day working visit, is scheduled to meet with Malaysian students and professionals in Jeddah and Makkah today, 2 January
According to the Facebook page of the Prime Minister’s Office, after the meeting, the prime minister is scheduled to perform the Umrah after the Maghrib prayers tonight.
“The prime minister will leave for Madinah tomorrow. Besides visiting the Prophet’s Mosque, he will also attend a luncheon with Malaysian students and professionals at the Holiday Villa Hotel Madinah,” it said.
Najib, who arrived in Jeddah yesterday, was welcomed by the Governor of Jeddah Prince Mish’al Abd Majid, Malaysian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Zainol Rahim Zainuddin, and other senior officials of the Malaysian government.
