Uber Driver In Penang Robs Passenger Out Of RM2,000 In Cash And Valuables
The incident happened around 5.30pm on Saturday.
Penang police are currently hunting down an Uber driver who allegedly robbed a passenger out of RM2,000 cash and valuables on Saturday, 25 August
The incident is said to have occurred around 5.30pm at a dead end in Bayan Lepas after the victim, an Indonesian national, called for an Uber ride home from Batu Maung.
The victim, Indonesian factory operator Yab Melva Novasia Sinaga, reported to have lost RM1,150, two million rupiah (RM613.81), a necklace, and a mobile phone in the robbery
Southwest District police chief Supt. Anuar Omar revealed that according to the victim's police report, the Uber driver forcibly took RM100 for the fare and RM250 for scolding him, with the rest of his takings left unjustified.
A spokesperson for Uber Malaysia said that the driver has already been removed from the platform and that they are ready to assist the police in their investigations
"The safety of our riders and drivers is a priority for Uber. We have a zero tolerance policy for this type of behaviour and strictly prohibit violence of any kind by a driver or rider on the Uber platform," said the Uber Malaysia spokesperson.
"Our standard procedure upon learning about incidences like these is to immediately suspend the driver from the platform pending the outcome of the police investigation. We stand ready to assist local authorities with their investigation.”
