This Woman Had To Pay RM40 After Her Son Complained Of "Sand" In His Drink
Not a pleasant experience to have on what was supposed to be a long-awaited outing.
What was supposed to be a happy outing between friends who have not seen each other a long time turned into a scary one of the group's 5-year-old son complained of "sand" in his drink when dining in a cafe in Penang
The mom of the boy narrated the incident - which happened on Saturday, 18 June - in a Facebook post which has been shared more than 2,700 times at the time of writing.
According to the poster, the group - made up of 10 adults and three young children - already noted several hiccups with service from the moment they arrived, but decided to brush them off as they do not seem to be a big deal
Upon arrival, the group found out that their request for three baby chairs were not fulfilled, despite having asked for it when they booked their table.
Chalking it up to miscommunication, they decided to fetch the baby chairs for themselves and asked one of the waitresses to add another table due to insufficient space in the initial table arrangement. To their surprise, the baby chairs were dirty (the moms wiped them down with wet tissues) and they were met with hostility when they asked for another table.
After ordering their food, the group noticed a "No kids allowed" signboard in a section of the cafe and realised that the cafe may not be suitable for their party as most of them are married and brought along their children. It should be noted, however, that the section actually houses the cafe's bar area.
Things came to a head when the food arrived. After taking a few sips of his chocolate strawberry frappe, her son complained that there is sand in his drink. To her surprise, she found tiny pieces of glass at the bottom of the glass!
"We couldn't really see what is inside, so we poured the chocolate frappe into another glass. That was when we found out that the inner layer of the glass was broken (the glass has two layers). My boy could have accidentally drank the tiny pieces of broken glass!" she wrote.
Thankfully, her son felt fine. However, when they informed a waitress about the broken glass, they were accused of deliberately breaking the glass and asked to pay for it!
"At the moment, I thought the cafe might have accidentally served broken glass. So I informed the waitress and asked her to handle the broken glass with care. This might not be a happy experience, but we did not blame the cafe since my boy is okay," the boy's mom wrote.
"But then, the cafe accused my boy of breaking the glass! They did not care about whether my boy was hurt by the broken glass, only if we will pay for the broken glass!"
"They kept arguing that the glass was still in good condition when served and that their cafe definitely does not serve broken glasses," she added.
Shocked, she asked for proof that her son broke the glass. CCTV footage was pulled, and to her surprise, she was told that the glass broke because her son stirred his drink with a spoon.
The cafe personnel added that the inner layer of the glass is very thin and easily broken, hence it cannot be stirred with a spoon.
"We were mad to the max! This is the first time I've heard of glasses that can't be stirred by a spoon! No sense at all!" the mom exclaimed in her FB post.
Ultimately, they decided the matter was not worth arguing over. Having paid RM40 for the broken glass and settled their bill, the group quickly left the cafe.
