In a time where almost everyone has a smartphone, it is a common sight to see people using it while they are walking.

But this habit could lead to some dire consequences.

That was exactly what happened to a woman in China, who reportedly had her right lower leg torn off after getting it trapped between the closing doors of a lift.

Footage of the incident, which happened on 21 June 2017 according to Daily Mail Online, had recently emerged on video platform iQiyi

The footage shows a short-haired woman, who appears to be staring at her phone, tripping and falling as she enters the lift

The lift doors then close on the woman's leg below the knee before she has time to move, trapping her as it moves up three floors before stopping.

Another woman behind her luckily escaped the dangerous situation as she did not walk in with her at the same time.

The footage then shows the woman lying on the ground as she waits for help.

Her lower leg was crushed and severed below the knee, according to reports

It is believed the horrifying accident took place in Conch Building, Zhongshan West Road, Shanghai.

It is not known if the woman survived the accident.

It doesn't matter whether you're walking or driving, your eyes should be fixed on where you're going, not your smartphone. Stay safe, everyone!
