Malaysia's squash queen Nicol Ann David, whose long list of international records and titles during her career of over two decades could dwarf any other sports icon, has been shortlisted for the World Games' Greatest Athlete of All Time poll alongside 23 other athletes

Retired in June 2019 with only one disappointment of never having the chance to be an Olympian in her career, the 37-year-old has been the most successful Malaysian sportsperson in the nation's history

Nicol never had the chance to be an Olympian as squash was never included as an Olympic sport.

The eight-time World Open title champion had said that she wanted to achieve her lifelong dream of being an Olympian so bad that she would trade all her world titles for a win at the Olympics.

"I would trade all of my world titles for just one Olympic gold medal. Every world title means the world to me, so that's how important the Olympics is in my heart," she was quoted as saying by CNN in 2012.

In the World Games' Greatest Athlete of All Time poll, Nicol is currently leading by over 10,000 votes due to her millions of fans boosting it

A SAYS team member sighted the poll being circulated on WhatsApp groups with people asking their family and friends to vote for Nicol in order to make her come out on top of the poll.

At the time of this writing, Nicol has received 10,5001 votes.

Mexican racquetball player Paola Longoria is in the second spot with 7,120, while Colombian skater Fabriana Arias has 4,957 votes, and Ukrainian powerlifter Larysa Soloviova has amassed 3,689 votes.

The voting began on Friday, 8 January

According to the World Games' website, of the current 24 athletes, only 10 highest ranked candidates will advance to the next level starting 20 January. They will continue in the race with the votes earned by then.

The voting ends on 1 February.
