[NEW UPDATE] Samsung 5G: Experts Say Samsung Is Hyping This

Some parts of the world, such as China, have yet to launch 4G networks, but already Samsung is promising to deliver high speed 5G wireless data connections to consumers by 2020. The claim comes as the firm announced it had developed its first core technology for fifth-generation networks. Samsung’s estimated speeds would allow a movie to be downloaded in under one second (BOOM). 'Follow this Story' for further updates.

Experts says 5G speed claim by Samsung came too early

The key problem is that there is no agreed 5G standard – and may not be for years, explained Shahram Niri, deputy director of the 5G Innovation Centre at Centre for Communications Systems Research (CCSR) at the University of Surrey.

It takes a couple of years to develop and agree the best way to do this, and then one or two years to set the standards in committees," he said. "And then it takes another two or three years to deliver the systems on chips and do the testing."

I wish we’d hear less from companies like Samsung about how magical things are going to be in six or seven years, and more about how they’re working to solve data capacity issues and prohibitive usage thresholds today.

The new technology, which will not be ready for the commercial market before 2020 at the earliest, would offer transmitting speeds “up to several hundred times faster” than existing 4G networks, it said in a statement.
