Google aims to challenge OpenAI's dominance in the AI space

In a recent blog post, Google chief executive officer Sundar Pichai wrote, "This new era of models represents one of the biggest science and engineering efforts we've undertaken as a company."

The company has been rapidly working to develop AI software that can compete with ChatGPT.

Currently, Google's AI assistant, Bard, has been upgraded to incorporate a part of the new Gemini model technology

The company is producing three versions of Gemini, each designed to consume a different amount of processing power

The robust version of Gemini is well-suited for data centres, while the simplest version is optimised for mobile devices.

The company also unveiled a new generation of custom AI chips

The custom AI chip, also known as tensor processing units (TPUs), is designed for training large AI models. These chips come in pods, each containing 8,960 chips.

Developers have begun previewing the new chips since 6 December 2023.
