Malaysia is Not Listed in Top 10 Countries With the Most Internet Freedom
Freedom House's annual Freedom on the Net report is out, and like in most such reports, the actual rankings are largely unsurprising. Iceland, the frozen whistleblower nirvana, ranked first, and second was Estonia, the tiny Baltic country that gave us Skype. Malaysia didn't even feature in top 20.
This chart shows the 10 countries with the highest degrees of Internet freedom, as measured by the Freedom House Index.
Iceland has the fewest barriers to Internet freedom, according a recent study ranking countries based on obstacles to access, limits on content and violations of user rights. Iceland scored just six out of a possible 40 points.

The United States tied with Germany for third place on the rankings, each with a total of 17 points each. As you can see, Asia runs the whole gamut of internet freedom. On one end is Japan, one of the most developed countries in Asia, and on the other is China, the world’s most populous country.
techinasia.comIt’s clear from the chart that the state of each country’s economy doesn’t have a clear impact on internet freedom, nor does the practice of democracy.
theatlantic.comIndonesia and Malaysia, which are both arguably in the similar emerging Asia category as Vietnam, are on the higher end of the freedom spectrum. However, Thailand, which is also a democracy, sits along with its one-party neighbors.
