After a year of speculation, Apple's new generation of smartphones are finally here!

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus were announced at Apple's annual keynote event in San Francisco on 7 September.

Prior to the release, there were swarms of rumours and leaks that began to paint a convincing picture of what the new generation smartphone would be like.

Now that the official images and specifications have been released, we gotta say that it's not too far off from the rumour mill.

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are essentially what we’ve been reading about for the past six months. Identical to last year's model, just with tweaked internals, an impressive new camera and a couple of new colour options in the form of a sexy 'Jet Black' finish.

Neither handset has a 3.5mm headphone jack and will be replaced with a new Lightning-connected EarPods or the completely wireless AirPods

According to Senior President of Marketing Apple, Phil Schiller, the AirPods will work up to 5 hours on a single charge. Equipped with a new chip called the W1, the new ear gear will be connected to the iPhone automatically.

The AirPods can be set up so one pod answers calls or summons Siri and the sound is intelligently routed to the right ear when needed.

Do note that the AirPods will NOT be packed in the box. You would have to buy them separately. They will be available in late October.

Instead, the Lighting-connected EarPods will be bundled together with the phone.

Design wise, 'Space Grey' is out and 'Jet Black' is in. The Home button has also been redesigned and is now Force Touch sensitive.

Instead of a button that physically moves, the new home button will use Apple's Taptic Engine to click back at users. Vibrations delivered through the home button will be used as notifications, with unique buzzes for things like text messages and calls.

Oh, did we mention that the iPhone will also be waterproof?

The new iPhone is also water and dust resistant, meeting the IP67 waterproofing standard. That standard is defined as complete resistance to dust, and water-resistant in a meter of water for 30 minutes.

Apple also changed up the camera systems in the new devices. Each comes with a wider camera lens and optical image stabiliser.

For starters, the 12-megapixel camera on the phones will take better low-light photos. Apple has also reworked the flash to make it brighter and able to capture better tones.

The front-facing camera comes with 7-megapixel, an upgrade from the 5-megapixel on the iPhone 6s.

True to the rumours, the major camera capabilities come via the iPhone 7 Plus dual-camera setup. One sensor is for telephoto while the other is a wide-angle lens. The front-facing secondary camera on both phones is a 7MP affair with digital auto stabilisation.

As for specs, Apple is sticking with an LCD Retina display while improving the processor with the new A10 Fusion chip

The A10 Fusion chip is a 64-bit quad-core processor. Two cores are high-performance, so they can run 40 percent faster than the chip on the iPhone 6s and twice as fast as the chip the iPhone 6.

Both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be available in silver, gold, rose gold and a new black finish in 32GB, 128GB and 256GB models while the new jet black finish will be offered exclusively on the 128GB and 256GB models

Pre-order for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus starts this Friday, 9 September and it will be available starting 16 September in first wave countries which include Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, US and the UK. As usual, Malaysia is still being left out from the first two waves. We'll probably have to wait a few more months for the phones to reach our shores.

We're hoping Apple has fixed the call quality issues because it would totally be a bummer if they didn't...
