We don’t have to be all hush-hush about this (;

SEX. It's a taboo topic, and people are usually quite malu to talk about it. This leaves a whole lot of people feeling curious and confused.

So, everyone just makes up their own conclusion, and that's why there are so many rumours surrounding sex.

"Eiyerrr, why you want to talk about this? I'm scared to talk about it. Go away."

"Eh, please don't have sex. My friend's uncle's cousin-twice-removed's brother did it and he got an infection."

But, we should normalise sex education. It's actually very, very important, because many young people have misconceptions about it.

STIs and contraception can be a very daunting subject, especially to the uninitiated, but don't worry! There's no need to sweat about rocking the bed on your malam pertama, hehe.

We're here to debunk six misconceptions that you may have surrounding sex! You're welcome :p

Misconception 1: "An STI test? For what? I don't have to do one because I don't have multiple partners."

PSA: Anyone who engages in unprotected intercourse, be it oral, vaginal, or anal CAN contract a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

It’s always best to go for a yearly check up as sometimes, you might not even know that you’ve contracted an STI, even if you’re in a monogamous relationship. Some STI symptoms don’t show up for weeks or months, or they don’t show up at all - because you could be asymptomatic.

Oh, by the way, natural growing bacteria at intimate areas can also cause STIs. So, it's not really about sleeping around and catching things, it’s just our bodies.

Yikes!

Misconception 2: "No need to worry about contraceptives lah, that's the guy's responsibility, right?"

Getting intimate is a decision made on BOTH ends, so contraception is something that both parties should be responsible for also lah (:

There's no need to feel shy in asking for, purchasing, or using contraception, because everyone deserves to be safe and protected. While there are other options that help prevent unwanted pregnancy, using a rubber barrier is the only way to stop the spread of STIs and keep both of you safe.

Misconception 3: "As long as he pulls out in time, I confirm won't get pregnant"

As long as you have unprotected intercourse, you’ll always be at risk of pregnancy. There are a few reasons why the pull out method is ineffective.

Firstly, it's not easy to predict ejaculation timing, and it only takes one slip up to potentially cause pregnancy. Plus, even pre-cum might contain a small percentage of sperm. So even if your partner successfully pulls out every single time y'all do it, there's still a chance of pregnancy.

Misconception 4: "It's just oral sex, so no need to wrap it up lah!"

So, you don't wanna wear rubber while getting a blowjob? HELLO. CANNOT.

'Wrapping it up' isn't only for penetrative sex because you can still transmit STIs orally, like gonorrhea, genital herpes and syphillis. The best way to prevent the spread of any STI would be to place a barrier between the genitalia and mouth, so that there's no passing of infected bodily fluids.

There's flavoured contraceptives too, ya know? Banana, orange, strawberry, what's your pick?

Misconception 5: "Women feel less satisfaction"

Two words. Ribbed, lubricated. The added texture from the ridges in ribbed or dotted rubbers can lead to greater enjoyment and extra sensation for women (;

Come on, guys. Ladies wanna feel good too, y'know? :p

Lubrication is also key because it prevents any form of discomfort during intercourse, and can help keep the rubber from tearing. All that friction may cause the rubber to get damaged, and that’s very bad news.

Misconception 6: "Contraceptives kacau the moment and spoil the mood lah"

It doesn't have to! Practice makes perfect, ya know? Familiarise yourself with the 'Tear, Pinch, and Roll' technique so it'll be like second nature to you. Refer to tutorials and practice in the dark too. Soon, you'll be able to get protection on quickly and correctly every time.

At the end of the day, everyone should protect themselves while getting intimate, because the risk of contracting STIs should be prevented

‘Bagging your tool’ is the most effective way to combat STIs, and can be used as a means of family planning.

This is not the tool to bag your tool.

“But, I lose sensation when I wrap it up”

Thinner wraps are meant to maximise pleasure, so you don’t have to compromise sensation for anything. Dotted and ribbed rubbers will help women feel good, so, to all the men reading this, don’t worry! The thinness of the sheath still remains the same, so you can still feel everything that’s going on down there (;

Remember, protection and health > everything else!

For over 80 years, Durex has always championed safe sex

Using the finest quality raw materials, every batch is tested meticulously as they are inflated with air to test their strength.

International standards demand that every rubber can contain 18 litres of air in this ‘air burst test’. A Durex rubber will typically expand to hold 40 litres of air without bursting. Wow!

Every pack is also dermatologically tested, so you can rest assured that you won't start itching down there when you're just getting into action.

Lastly, samples are also filled with water to make sure they don’t leak. Around two million tests are carried out per month and if one sample fails the quality control examination, the whole batch doesn't make the cut.

You know what's even more exciting? Durex is holding a contest from 1 August to 15 September 2020!
