Having a place of your own is considered a sign of wealth in the country.

So in order to climb up the social ladder, a Chinese woman has come up with an ingenious, if morally dubious, method of raising the deposit for a house - she persuaded her 20 boyfriends to each buy her an iPhone 7

As confirmed by BBC, the story emerged from a forum site. A user who goes by the name of 'Proud Qiaoba’ recounted the story of a work colleague, known only as 'Xiaoli' who raised around 115,010 Yuan (RM71,315) by convincing her 20 boyfriends to buy her an iPhone 7.

The woman, from the city of Shenzhen, then sold all of the phones to a mobile phone recycling site called 'Hui Shou Bao'

The site paid 5,750 Yuan (RM3,570) for each iPhone. She fulfilled her dream of buying a house in the countryside using the cash from the phones to put down a deposit on her first home.

"Everyone in the office is talking about this now," wrote Proud Qiaoba, "Who knows what her boyfriends think now this news has become public."

He further added that Xiaoli came from a normal family and was the eldest daughter

“Her parents are getting old and she might be under a lot pressure hoping to buy them a house... But it's still unbelievable that she could use this method!"

Since the incident, a hashtag which translates as '20 mobiles for a house' has quickly begun to circulate on Chinese social media website Weibo, and became the country's top trend
