For the past few years, students in tertiary education have been receiving the 1Malaysia Book Voucher or Bantuan Buku 1Malaysia (BB1M) as the government aims to reduce the burden of academic book costs.

However, starting this year, eligible students will be receiving the RM250 assistance through a bank account instead of receiving them in the form of vouchers. The RM250 assistance will be debited directly inside a Bank Rakyat account and students will obtain a card known as KADS1M (Kad Diskaun Siswa 1Malaysia).

In addition to the RM250 assistance, students will also get discounts when using the KADS1M to buy selected goods and services, subject to the conditions set by the participating companies and merchants.

In order to receive this assistance, you'd have to fulfil the following criteria:

1. Malaysian
2. An active student studying at a public or private institution as of 31 December 2016
3. Studying full-time or part-time
4. Not a BR1M (Bantuan Rakyat 1 Malaysia) recipient
5. Be in Malaysia during the implementation of KADS1M Debit card programme

Students are required to open an i-Saving account with Bank Rakyat and submit an online application for KADS1M

Students may use this card to buy books, stationery, computer equipment and Internet access. KADS1M functions like any other debit cards although it is said that the amount is limited to only RM250.
