Even states that are far away from the flood are already feeling the financial burden.

In the worst-hit east coast state of Kelantan alone, there are about 150,000 farmers and livestock breeders with destroyed padi fields and vegetable plots, drowned livestock and swamped fish ponds. The total damage to property and infrastructure in all the affected states is still being tallied but already the cost is close to RM1bil. Some officials announced estimates yesterday totalling RM878mil.

KTMB Berhad estimates the damage to the east coast railway infrastructure at RM250 million

To help the flood victims, Prime Minister Najib has promised an allocation of RM500 million

On 5 January, the Deputy Finance Minister announced that a staggering RM800 million had been spent in the first phase of the flood disaster relief

Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan revealed that the government has so far spent about RM800 million to help victims in the states affected by floods. He said the amount was for the provision of food supplies, logistics and for the cleaning up of the victims' houses. "The government is also preparing for a contingency provision should a second wave of floods hit the country," he had said.

Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said the amount allocated was huge and as such, its management needed to be transparent. "The RM800 million fund for relief is huge. PAC will ask the Finance Ministry and the NSC to explain in detail how the allocation will be channelled to flood victims," Nur Jazlan told The Malaysian Insider.

In Kelantan, the state government is sourcing for RM52.5 million to build houses for an approximate 1,500 flood victims who have lost their homes

In Kota Baru, Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob said apart from the Federal Government’s proposal to build temporary shelters, the state government had a long-term plan of building permanent houses with three rooms for flood victims who lost their homes. “We are sourcing for RM52.5mil to carry out a project to build houses for about 1,500 flood victims who lost their houses. We are hoping for contributions from millionaires and banking institutions to fund the project.”

The reparation of roads, drains and sewerage system will cost at least RM338 million, as announced by Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof

Berita Harian added that Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof had calculated that at least RM338 million would be needed to repairs roads, drains and sewerage systems. "Of the figure, RM204 million will be required by Kelantan, Pahang, and Terengganu and RM78 million in Johor, Malacca and Negri Sembilan. “Perak, Kedah and Perlis will roughly need about RM55.6 million," he said.

These numbers are still an early estimate as the total damages are still being calculated

Felda chairman Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad said the land development authority was conducting a survey to determine the extent of damage and losses.

Agriculture and Agro-Based Industries Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said a more accurate estimate of damage was not yet possible because most of the farmers were still in relief centres.

Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s Kelantan office general-manager Md Yuslan Md Yusof also could not put a figure to the damage but added that the flood damaged equipment such as switchgear, transformers, cables, conductors and electricity poles, mostly in Tanah Merah, Gua Musang and Kuala Krai.

Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof said he could only give an accurate estimate on damage once the water subsided.

Also, with the farmers affected, the prices of vegetables are rising nationwide because the commodity has become scarce and inaccessible roads make it difficult to get the produce to market.
