The owner of the phone, Brianna Olivas, said her phone "exploded" and started smoking on Wednesday, 22 February. Her boyfriend grabbed his phone and started recording the video, which has garnered 30,300 retweets on Twitter.

The video shows smoke pouring out of one side of the phone and the iPhone's case melting away

Olivas says the trouble began the day before when her iPhone 7 Plus, which she bought from US telco Sprint in January, wouldn't turn on.

She took the phone to an Apple Store where employees ran tests and told her everything was fine. The phone appeared to be working normally again.

That changed the next morning when her boyfriend moved the phone from the bed to dresser. It started "steaming" and making a "squealing noise". He quickly tossed the phone into the sink where it later "blew up and smoke started coming out."

Olivas has since handed the handset over to Apple for further testing

“We are in touch with the customer and looking into it,” Apple said in a statement to Mashable.

While a battery explosion can result from a faulty repair or shady knockoff charger, Olivas told Gizmodo she always uses her Apple charger to charge her phone.
