1. Fanta Grape – Lil Asian Thiccie
Think: Doja Cat. Now make her Malaysian, cooler, and just as unapologetically herself! Debuting her evolution into the hyper-pop superstar of her dreams, Lil Asian Thiccie's single entitled Fanta Grape marks the introduction into the next phase of her career. The single is co-produced by local 'Cina music' label Ban Huat Sdn Bhd's Franco.$ and JAAKE and takes on the form of a smooth rap-pop R&B-inspired number.
2. Body And Mind – girl in red
22-year-old Norwegian singer-songwriter and record producer Marie Ulven - better known by her stage name 'girl in red' - is known for her brand of indie-pop music that's backed by very personal, nerve-touching lyrics. This time, armed with her 11-track debut album, if i could make it go quiet, she's ready to take on a grittier, darker look at the world.
Speaking to Apple Music's Zane Lowe, Ulven said of the song, "I've experienced a lot of self-hatred this past year, which I've never really understood. Realising that you are a person is really f-cking weird. I think a lot of people struggle with accepting mortality. People fixing up their bodies, changing themselves because they just want to avoid the inevitable, which is dying and ageing. This is me trying to comfort myself: 'I've had my deepest cries for now/My heart's out, my guard's down.' I'm accepting this, and I don't want to beat myself up for being a person. I think ageing as a concept is really beautiful because it just means that you're alive still."
3. Cherry Bomb – Finn Askew
British musician Finn Askew from Wellington in southwest England has a unique yet comfortable sound. Could it be due to his love for Juice WRLD and Lil Peep, on top of his experience growing up with a mixture of Nirvana, The Smiths, and The Beach Boys? Whatever the case, his latest track, Cherry Bomb is addictive as heck! The 20-year-old sings about holding on to the love he's grown to know.
4. Choker – Twenty One Pilots
Choker is the second promotional single from Twenty One Pilots' sixth studio album, Scaled and Icy – the first being Shy Away.
The 11-track record was written and largely produced by Tyler Joseph over the course of the past year at his home studio while he was in coronavirus-enforced isolation, with Josh Dun engineering the drums remotely from across the country. Scaled And Icy is "the product of long-distance virtual sessions and finds the duo processing their upended routines along with the prevailing emotions of 2020 – anxiety, loneliness, boredom, and doubt".
5. Even When / The Best part – Olivia Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett
From the second season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (yes, that's the name of the show), drivers license star Olivia Rodrigo on the ukelele and her co-star Joshua Bassett on the guitar as they sweetly sing about long-distance love.
Even When/The Best Part will appear in the 'Valentine's Day' episode, which spotlights Nini (Rodrigo) and Ricky (Bassett) struggling to physically spend the holiday together.
6. I DID IT – DJ Khaled featuring Post Malone, Meghan Thee Stallion, Dababy, Lil Baby
DJ Khaled is really proving that 'We the best music', with this feature-stacked song. In what he calls "the evolving of Khaled Khaled", Khaled works with Meghan Thee Stallion and Dababy for the first time, while Khaled has worked with Posty on Celebrate and with Lil Baby on You Stay and Weather the Storm.
On the track, Khaled says: "The record we made together – wow. It's one of those records where, you know, after like a Superbowl win or an NBA championship, or any accomplishment – the last time I felt like this was All I Do Is Win. This is the feeling I'm gettin'."
It's not just this track that's backed by big names. The other tracks on Khaled Khaled will see Justin Bieber, 21 Savage, Jay-Z, Nas, Diddy, Rick Ross, H.E.R., Justin Timberlake, Drake, and more. The album, his twelfth, is a follow-up to his 2019 album, Father of Asahd. The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 and features his first Grammy-winning song Higher, featuring John Legend and the late Nipsey Hussle.
7. Die For A Man – Bebe Rexha, Lil Uzi Vert
Lil Uzi Vert promised fans that his next album is "coming soon" but while we wait for more information, he's managed to get some time in with Baby I'm Jealous hitmaker Bebe Rexha for the track, Die For A Man. In the track, the pair sing about staying true to themselves and won't lose who they are for their partner.
The track is set to appear on her highly anticipated sophomore album, Better Mistakes – set to drop May 7 – which also features appearances from Ty Dolla $ign, Doja Cat, Rick Ross, Pink Sweats, Travis Barker, and more.
8. Without You (Remix) – The Kid Laroi, Miley Cyrus
Staying true to the original song, the remix of Australian rapper The Kid Laroi's hit, Without You hits harder snow with Miley Cyrus' signature raspy vocals. Suddenly, the song seems that much more emotional with the duo singing about a love-hate relationship. Where it was just the 17-year-old trying to communicate his feelings towards a girl on the track, it is now as if the girl is responding as they both deal with the struggles of heartbreak.
Disclaimer: The song contains explicit lyrics.
The pair teased the remix earlier this month when Cyrus posted a TikTok of herself singing along to the new version amidst a backdrop of headlines around her various high-profile relationships. Fans of the artistes will be able to watch them perform the remix live, during this weekend's Saturday Night Live session (featuring SpaceX's Elon Musk as host).
9. Your Power – Billie Eilish
In her latest track from her upcoming second studio album, Happier Than Ever, Eilish sings about people who abuse their power. Ironically, it comes at a time where police brutality and abuse in the entertainment industry has taken centre stage in the media.
Of the song, Eilish says: "this is one of my favorite songs i've ever written. i feel very vulnerable putting this one out because i hold it so close to my heart. this is about many different situations that we've all either witnessed or experienced. i hope this can inspire change. try not to abuse your power."
Fans speculate that the song is about Eilish's relationship with Q, with whom the singer had a volatile relationship when she was 16 (and he was 22). The tracklist for Billie Eilish's Happier Than Ever album contains 16 songs and will drop on the 30 July.
