#NewMusicFlyday is our list of the hottest song releases, music videos, and exclusive interviews of the week

Malaysia's very own rock favourites, Kyoto Protocol, want you to know that "this too, shall pass" while Calvin Harris and Tom Grennan ask that you "don't give up the fight".

Meanwhile, award-winning songwriter blackbear is ready to add to his growing list of hits with his latest release. Dua Lipa, on her part, is venturing into OSTs, melding her steady voice with the smooth workings of a saxophone for the upcoming film, Gully.

At the same time, John Mayer is creating his own genre and bringing back the 80s with the first single off his upcoming album, Sad Rock.

We've also got two contrasting songs from in-demand K-pop groups TXT and MAMAMOO.

Speaking of in-demand, Grammy award-winning trendsetter Billie Eilish is getting comfortable with her track, Lost Cause.

1. Nothing Lasts Forever – Kyoto Protocol

In their first original release since their 2018 album, The Pen Is Mightier, famed Malaysian rock band Kyoto Protocol are back with their latest track!

The track is a tribute to fallen rock idols Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain, and Layne Staley. The band's motif for the track? A simple reminder that...

"Though we find ourselves in a less-than-ideal situation, nothing lasts forever [...] no matter how hard it gets, we must continue to press on. For this too, shall pass."

Kyoto Protocol – consisting of members Fuad (vocals/lead guitars), Gael (vocals/keyboards), Hairi (guitars), Shakeil (bass), and Shanjeev (drums) – are entering their 12th year as a band, having marked their decade together with the release of a rockumentary and live album (recorded at the band's anniversary concert at The Bee, Publika in 2019) TEN.

2. By Your Side – Calvin Harris ft Tom Grennan

His first track of the year and it's a summery one!

Scottish DJ Calvin Harris has enlisted the help of British musician Tom Grennan - a professionally trained footballer turned accidental musical prodigy who tried out for Northampton and Aston Villa.

Fans of the We Found Love DJ would notice that the song is reminiscent of his early 2010s sound, with emphasis on a more feel-good and upbeat vibe. Tom Grennan's uniquely raw indie/alternative voice gives depth to the otherwise flighty track, as he sings:

"When you get a little lonely
And you lose your rhythm,
don't give up the fight"

The 37-year-old, however, began releasing music under the moniker Love Regenerator in 2020 after going on a journey to "rediscover the way he originally began producing music 22 years ago".

As Love Regenerator, Harris released three EPs Love Regenerator 1, 2, and 3, which included the tracks Live Without Your Love featuring Steve Lacy, Hypnagogic, and CP-1.

As Calvin Harris, only one track was released in 2020: Over Now, with Canadian singer The Weeknd.

3. u love u – blackbear ft Tate McRae

After announcing the song – alongside a 37-second snippet on Instagram – Matthew Tyler Musto has released the track, u love u. The song, which features you broke me first hitmaker Tate McRae, is the first to drop from his upcoming EP misery lake.

The 30-year-old musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer has already put out five studio albums and six EPs, on top of writing credits that include Justin Bieber's Boyfriend, Nick Jonas's Numb, Jeremy Zucker's talk is overrated, All Time Low's Monsters, and Maroon 5's Beautiful Mistakes.

4. CAN THEY HEAR US – Dua Lipa

Lending her voice to the upcoming drama film, Gully, is Dua Lipa on a track that is heavy, dramatic, and saxophone-laced. Gully – music video legend Nabil Elderkin's debut feature film – stars Kelvin Harrison Jr, Charlie Plummer, Jacob Latimore, and Amber Heard. It follows three disaffected teens in Los Angeles navigating being marginalised youth when a dark secret challenges their friendship.

The nine-song soundtrack features a new single from 21 Savage titled, Betrayed, while Ty Dolla $ign, Schoolboy Q, and B-Real have teamed up for Blacks n Mexicans. The soundtrack also features music from Miguel, Snoh Aalegra, Gary Clark Jr, 2 Chainz, Don Toliver, Sleepy Rose, Mike Will Made-It, and Buddy.

5. Last Train Home – John Mayer

43-year-old Gravity singer John Mayer recently discovered his love for TikTok and has used the platform to drop new music teasers for weeks now.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Mayer revealed that the teasers have all led up to this moment: the announcement of his eighth album titled, Sob Rock.

Ahead of the release of the album, Mayer has dropped the single Last Train Home.

The creative process for the album, Mayer says, had him asking himself: "What music makes me feel like everything's going to be OK? And it's the music I listened to growing up in the 80s. There's a security-blanket aspect about that sound that reminds me of a safer time."

Mayers last album was 2017's The Search for Everything. Sob Rock will arrive 16 July.

6. OX1=LOVESONG (I KNOW I LOVE YOU) – TXT

TXT – a five-member boy group that debuted under Big Hit Music in 2019, and known for their hits Crown, Can't You See Me?, and Blue Hour – are now ready to take over the music charts once again.

Their latest single, OX1=LOVESONG (I KNOW I LOVE YOU), member Beom-gy explains to Korea Herald, is a "love song of a boy, whose world had meant almost nothing (0), encountering a girl (1)".

The track is one of eight, set to be included in the group's second album, The Chaos Chapter: Freeze, and follows the group's The Dream Chapter series.

Leader Soo-bin said, "While The Dream Chapter had been a coming-to-age story of a boy who meets a girl, The Chaos Chapter shows the encounter between a boy, frozen due to a sudden chaos in his world, and a girl who comes to save his hurt soul."

7. Where Are We Now – MAMAMOO

Through the years, MAMAMOO has always delivered sonically, with their solid vocal performances cementing their place as the vocal queens of the South Korean music industry. In their pre-released 'spoiler film' for their latest album, Where Are We, the girls talk about what the title song means to them.

Wheein remarks, "MAMAMOO has rarely released a ballad as a title track, so I think that's something special. It feels like we can show the vibe that we've grown over the past seven years."

Solar (real name Kim Yong Sun) describes the song: "Where Are We contains the stories of the MAMAMOO members over the past seven years, but it also contains stories about life that anyone can relate to. We went through a lot of joys and hardships in the past seven years, and we tried to show that in the music video."

WAW is a three-part project, which will feature a concert and documentary, in addition to the album. The tracklist for MAMAMOO's Where Are We include: Where Are We Now, 내일의 너, 오늘의 나 (Another Day), 애써 (A Memory for Life), and 우린 결국 다시 만날 운명이었지 (Destiny Part 2).

8. Lost Cause – Billie Eilish

The 19-year-old's latest single, Lost Cause, sees her singing about moving on from someone she considers – you guessed it – a "lost cause". This person is someone who lacks emotional maturity, someone who thinks they're above the law despite not even being able to hold down a job, a self-centred individual who failed to notice her efforts in the relationship.

Lost Cause is the fourth off her upcoming 16-track album, Happier Than Ever.

It's preceded by Your Power, Therefore I Am, and my future. The album, her second after her award-winning debut project, WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?, is set to release on 30 July.
