When it comes to iconic Halloween transformations, few deliver as much creativity and passion as Sasha Bashir

This year, the Malaysian mother of two has dived into local pop culture, blending iconic local personalities with global characters.

Here's a peek into her creative process and the DIY magic behind each look.

First up, Sasha took on a familiar figure from Malaysian folklore: Hantu Kak Limah

"She's one of our most famous hantu because of the box office hit movie, so that was an easy choice," she explains.

To capture the ghostly essence, she assembled key elements like a batik sarong, a Kedah-style top, and the character's unforgettable wild hair.

Sasha sourced a wig online and styled it by hand, ensuring it had that "just-crawled-out-of-the-grave" vibe. Combined with white makeup and dark circles, she achieved the perfect eerie aesthetic.

When Sasha first saw Dato Seri Vida's extravagant Ku Ikhlaskan music video, she knew the flamboyant style had to be part of her lineup

Inspired by Vida's larger-than-life Queen of Hearts look, Sasha set out to recreate the dramatic heart-shaped headpiece.

She crafted it using a thin plastic board, glitter foam, and some strategic gluing for that iconic Vida flair. Pairing it with glittery fabric and a touch of her own styling creativity, Sasha captured the opulent spirit of Dato Seri Vida — a look that's sure to turn heads.

A longtime fan of Tim Burton's eccentric characters, Sasha was thrilled to add Beetlejuice's latest character, Delores (played by Monica Bellucci), to her lineup

She repurposed a black dress, originally designed by her friend Faizal Hamid, which she'd previously used for her 2020 Queen of Hearts look.

With some delicate lace gloves and matching makeup, Sasha's version of Delores was a dark, glamorous homage to Burton's gothic charm.

The Corpse Bride look was Sasha's most complex transformation this year

Envisioning layers upon layers of ruffles and flowers, she started by purchasing materials from Shein and crafting her bouquet with artificial flowers from MR.DIY.

When her attempt to dye the ruffles blue didn't work, she switched to spray paint, achieving an even better effect!

"Really happy with how this look turned out," she says, capturing the haunting beauty of Tim Burton's classic character.

Creating these distinct looks wasn't just about accuracy; Sasha made each costume her own

She explains, "I always try to push my creativity by coming up with an interpretation of the character's styling instead of a 100% direct copy."

This DIY process involved spray-painting fabric, gluing glittery foam, and a lot of patience.

Her favourite part? "The creative phase of putting the looks together," says Sasha. The joy is in finding clothes, making custom pieces, and even experimenting with makeup and poses to capture each character's essence.

"My photographer, Jay Ismail, who's been with me for four years on these shoots, always gets the best shots," she shares. To bring the characters to life, Sasha adjusts her poses and expressions to reflect each personality, fully embracing the characters she's worked so hard to recreate.

Of course, there were challenges along the way — unexpected mishaps like fabric dye that didn't stick and double-sided tape that wouldn't hold. But Sasha sees these challenges as part of the thrill: "All these challenges end up being part of the fun anyway, hahaha."

With a few ideas brewing for next year — and a new sewing machine — Sasha is excited to keep evolving her DIY skills. "I'm interested to see what movies come out next year that might inspire my looks," she says.
