Here's How To Fix Your Income Tax Filing If You Made A Mistake On The Declaration Form

You can amend genuine mistakes up to six months from the filing deadline.

Did you hit Tandatangan & Hantar for your e-BE form, only to realise you made a mistake?

Don't worry, it's not the end of the world!

Whether it's your first time filing taxes or you've done it multiple times before, it can still be a complicated process, so it's not unusual to miss out a detail or two.

Thankfully, the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (LHDN) lets you amend genuine mistakes up to six months from the tax filing deadline, which falls on 30 April (manual filing) or 15 May (e-Filing) this year.

According to LHDN's website, only taxpayers who have filed their taxes on time are allowed to make a one-time self amendment per year.

If you haven't filed your taxes yet, read this step-by-step guide and a list of tax reliefs you can claim for the 2023 assessment.

Here's what to do if you made a mistake in your income tax submission:

First, you'll need to determine whether your error can be fixed online or if you'll need to visit an LHDN branch.

You can make an online amendment for over-declared income or under-claimed tax relief. For instance, you may have mistakenly put a higher amount for your aggregated income, or forgotten to claim for your life insurance — mistakes like these can be fixed online.

You'll need to visit an LHDN branch for not declared or under-declared income, as well as over-claimed tax relief, expenses, and other incentives.

For errors that can be fixed online:

STEP 1: Log in to the mytax.hasil.gov.my website

STEP 2: Under ezHasil Services, select 'e-Filing', then select 'e-Permohonan Pindaan BE' / ‘e-Application for Amended BE'

STEP 3: Choose the year of assessment

STEP 4: Go through the forms and update your information accordingly

STEP 5: Upload relevant documents to support your edits

After submitting, you'll have to wait for LHDN to process your documents. Keep an eye out in your email or mailbox for any updates.

If you see an error message when you try to submit, it's likely that your errors cannot be fixed online. This means you'll need to go to an LHDN branch to make amendments to your tax filing.

For errors that need to be fixed at an LHDN branch:

STEP 1: Take a number at an LHDN branch and request for an Amended Return Form (ARF)

STEP 2: When your number is called, present your ARF, your EA/EC Form(s) for the year of assessment, and any relevant documents or receipts for tax relief

STEP 3: You will receive a call from the auditor in charge of your case to confirm the amendment has been reflected

If your amendment is in regards to something other than under- or over-declared income and relief, you'll need to write an appeal letter (in Bahasa Melayu) and bring it along with relevant supporting documents to an LHDN branch.

You can contact LHDN at 03-89111000 or via live chat.
