Check Out These 10 Homegrown Stores That Can Deliver Reusable Face Masks

And as long as there is no vaccine, wearing a mask when we leave the house may just need to become a part of our new norm.

To be friendlier on the environment, we've put together a list of homegrown stores that are making and/or selling reusable face masks:

1. Midnight Seamstress

Yee Sien, the designer behind Midnight Seamstress, sells face masks which she sews from scratch.

Customers can pick from a range of fabric options and have them made into masks according to their personal taste and style. They come in three sizes:
- 3 to 6 years old
- Kids above 7 years old
- Adults

Each mask comes with a pointed design at the nose bridge and a nose wire slot for a better fit. There is also an opening inside the mask to change its filter easily.

They provide customised versions for Muslim friends who wear tudung/hijab by replacing the elastic on the mask with a string.

Each mask costs between RM22 and RM34 each. Get one for yourself by dropping her a message on Instagram. Or you can buy them from her online store on Shopee.

2. Surya Bags

After observing that many husbands in the refugee community had lost their jobs and could not afford to pay rent or buy food, Surya Bags came up with a project to support these families.

They provide fair pay to Myanmar refugees who handmake washable face masks. And with the profits earned, they invest back into the community, such as doing food delivery for families in need.

The masks come in three sizes for:
- 3 to 7 years old
- 8 to 12 years old
- Adults

You can mix and match. Each mask costs RM15 and the minimum order is two pieces.

To order, check their Facebook page and decide which design and size you want then drop them a message with the details.

3. Young Women's Christian Association of KL (YWCA)

Non-governmental organisation YWCA is selling handmade masks sewn by women from the B40 community.

The project was started as an initiative to provide income-generating opportunities and entrepreneurial training for students of their Vocational Training Opportunity Centre (VTOC), which provides free skills training to underprivileged young women. Since then, their network of sewers has expanded to help more women, i.e. sewers from Desa Mentari flats and other women NGOs.

Each mask comes with an insertion pocket and is available in a range of plain and patterned fabrics.

It costs RM15 each or RM36 for three. For orders above 50, each mask will cost RM10. They currently deliver to areas in Klang Valley. Delivery charges are an additional RM5.

4. Cuci Ceria Project

Geutanyoe Foundation and Rohingya Kasih Centre collaborated to start the Cuci Ceria Project, which supports a team of refugees and local women in B40 communities in Malaysia.

All proceeds go fully towards paying the women who are sewing the masks and to sponsor hygiene kits for families in need.

Each mask costs RM10 and can be bought from So Moreish Cafe in Mont Kiara. They also do deliveries via Grab. For larger orders, you can email cuciceria@gmail.com.

5. Zarareez

Zarareez has three different sizes of washable cloth masks available for:

- Young kids (1 to 3 years old)
- Kids (3 to 12 years old)
- Adults

Each mask costs between RM12 and RM17 depending on the size and the materials.

6. Changgih Designs

Social enterprise Changgih Designs provides job opportunities for mums living in villages in Sabah. Each pleated face mask is carefully measured and hand-stitched by their artisans. And it comes with a nose wire for a better fit.

It costs RM15 each. Postage charges to West Malaysia is RM5 for orders below RM40 and free delivery for those above RM40.

10% of all proceeds are set aside for community-building programmes. You can order through their website or drop them a message on WhatsApp.

7. The Woow Woow

Although they specialise in handmade pet products, The Woow Woow also sells cotton cloth face masks for children and adults. 

Each mask costs RM8 and comes with a pocket for you to insert any filter. Postage charges are RM6 for West Malaysia and RM13 for East Malaysia.

To order, simply drop them a message on Facebook stating the design and size you want.

The Batik Boutique has a range of pretty batik designed masks that come in multiple sizes.

The Little Clothing Shop practises zero waste by ensuring that all fabric scraps do not go to waste. Excess fabrics used to make these washable masks are recycled.

To reduce waste, their masks are made to order. Each one costs RM30.
