A couple in Negeri Sembilan has shared how they managed to purchase their dream home, a two-storey terrace house valued at nearly RM700,000, by saving 20% of their monthly salary

Mohd Sollehi Arshad, 31, and his wife Munirah Mahmud, 30, who have been married for five years, revealed that their disciplined approach to saving played a crucial role in securing the property located in Mambau.

"My wife and I had always planned to buy our own house as we were living in a family-provided home. However, we weren't very serious about it, like doing proper surveys or anything," Sollehi said.

Their journey towards homeownership took a turn after they visited a property sales exhibition, where they were captivated by a presentation about the house's concept and location, reported Harian Metro.

"Most importantly, [we were attracted to the house's] proximity to our parents' homes," he added.

Sollehi said that the process of purchasing their first home went smoothly as the salesperson handled all the necessary arrangements

"In my opinion, the most important thing when buying a house is having good savings, which assures the bank that's providing the financing of our financial capability," he shared.

According to the couple, they had been saving 20% of their combined income each month, a strategy they had maintained even before the house purchase, allowing them to make the significant investment.

"Every month, my wife and I saved at least 20% of our income, which we allocated for savings to use for important purchases, including preparations to buy a house," he explained.

However, Sollehi stressed that buying the house was only the first step. He and his wife are now focused on managing their finances carefully to cover additional costs related to the home.

"Once you've bought a house, there will be extra costs for renovations and interior design, so my wife and I can live comfortably in it." he said, adding that they had set aside further savings for these post-purchase expenses, ensuring they could make their new home both comfortable and personalised.

The Harian Metro report did not provide details about their specific line of work.

Meanwhile, sharing more about their new home, the couple said they were particularly drawn to the house due to its modern design and spacious layout, which allows for flexibility in future renovations

"In terms of design, we were really attracted because it has a fairly spacious living room, and there's no partition between the living area and the kitchen. So, we can modify it to suit our personal taste.

"Although we don't have children yet, the spacious house is important because our family is quite large, and when they come over, it will be comfortable for our guests," the husband said.

Sollehi also noted that while the area is still under development, they have confidence in the future potential of the neighbourhood, which will include schools, commercial centres, and medical facilities.

Speaking of savings, a 64-year-old retiree shared how he exhausted his retirement savings of RM750,000 within seven years of retiring:
